About us

The five-member board of county commissioners is the governing body of Escambia County. Commissioners are elected to four-year terms by voters within their respective districts. The powers delegated by the state legislature are exercised by enactment of ordinances and resolutions, setting policy and through the county administrator, giving direction to county departments, commissions and agencies. As the chief administrative officer of the county, the county administrator is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners. It is the administrator's responsibility to implement the day-to-day operations of county government, including overseeing the county departments of Budget, Extension Services, Community & Media Relations, Corrections, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Parks & Recreation, Public Safety, Public Works, Neighborhood & Human Services, Extension Services, Fire-Rescue, Purchasing, Building Inspections, Information & Technology, Natural Resources Management, Library Services, and Waste Services. Approximately 1,650 people are in employed in these departments and fall under the county administrator’s leadership. The county’s total budget for Fiscal Year 2016-17 was more than $436 million which allows Escambia County to provide a full range of services. This includes the construction and maintenance of highways, streets, and other infrastructure, as well as fire protection, emergency management, health and social services, emergency medical services, landfill operation, mass transportation services and parks and recreational programs.

  • 👏 Yesterday marked the completion of our Summer Youth Employment Program, where nearly 200 local youth gained valuable on-the-job experience while working toward their future career goals. 💼 Through the paid internship program, participating youth worked up to 30 hours per week in various county departments, learning a variety of practical job skills along with workplace etiquette such as professional dress, timeliness and respect. 🙌 “Our Summer Youth Employment Program is one of the most important programs we offer at Escambia County, because it gives young people an opportunity to experience a professional workplace while helping them determine what career path they may want to pursue,” District 3 Commissioner Lumon May said. “The mentorship and job experience they gain from this program is invaluable, and I’m so proud of all of our participants for their hard work and dedication all summer long.   • 🎉 Congratulations to Escambia County Corrections employees Capt. Shawn Hankins and Sgt. Lonnie Wilson on their graduation from leadership programs through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement! Capt. Hankins graduated from the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute’s Senior Leadership Program and Sgt. Wilson graduated from the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute’s Florida Leadership Academy, both of which require a rigorous application and selection process. Capt. Hankins and Sgt. Wilson were selected from applicants throughout the state to participate in the multi-week programs, which teach participants critical skills to be effective leaders through the challenges faced by criminal justice professionals. Sgt. Wilson was among 44 first-line supervisors serving in leadership roles selected for the Florida Leadership Academy, with participants representing 37 criminal justice agencies throughout the state. He was also nominated and selected as class president. “I’m incredibly proud of Capt. Hankins and Sgt. Wilson for taking the initiative and putting in the hard work it takes to apply for and complete these programs,” Escambia County’s Chief of Corrections Rich Powell said. “Corrections is a demanding and challenging career, and it’s imperative to develop and recognize strong leaders who can successfully guide our team through challenges that come our way.   • 🙌 The Pensacola Beach Air Show was a tremendous success over the weekend! The beach hosted thousands, and throughout the weekend, the Pensacola Beach Public Works team worked tirelessly to keep the beach litter-free, public facilities stocked and clean, trash cans emptied, barricades and markers in place for the show, and maintained the parking lots, upon other duties, all to make sure the patrons of Pensacola Beach had an incredible experience. Public Works crews were working around the clock to ensure the beach was prepared for one of the best weekends of the year, and Escambia County is thankful for our hard-working team. The Pensacola Beach Air Show cannot be successful without our Public Works team!

  • 👏 Congratulations to District 2 Commissioner Mike Kohler for achieving the Advanced County Commissioner Level I designation from the Institute for County Government! The ACC I designation is the first level of leadership achievement in the Advanced County Commissioner Program offered by ICG and signifies the completion of 27 hours of coursework. 🙌 "As a new Commissioner serving in my second year, I can’t express how impressed I am with the Institute for County Government in assisting and developing commissioners," Commissioner Kohler said. "The resources and expertise are comparable to Command Leadership training I was exposed to in the United States Navy." 📝 ACC I is a voluntary program designed to provide county commissioners with resources to enhance their ability to serve their local communities. The program consists of core education courses, such as growth management, financial management, and ethics, as well as elective courses such as affordable housing, emergency management, and resiliency.   • 🥳 Please join us in celebrating our July Employee of the Month, Derrick Williams! Derrick is a Housing Intake Specialist in the Neighborhood Enterprise Division of the Neighborhood and Human Services Department. 🏡 Derrick recently celebrated 10 years with Escambia County, having begun his career in June 2014. As a Housing Intake Specialist, Williams provides customer service to prospective and current applicants for programs related to housing rehabilitation, first-home homebuyer, and community development programs. He is homeowners’ first point of contact when inquiring about county housing programs, and his wealth of knowledge has helped many Escambia County citizens over the years. 🙌 Williams has been celebrated by his team for his creativity, hard work and attention to detail. He regularly researches the latest guidelines to ensure the department remains in compliance when reviewing applications for housing programs and looks for ways to better serve county residents. He works closely with other county departments and agencies, including the Escambia County Property Appraiser and Tax Collector as well as title companies and banks. Williams approaches his tasks with a positive attitude and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Outside of his work duties, Williams is a regular member of his church and enjoys playing the piano during services. 👏 “Derrick is a creative and hardworking asset to our department," Neighborhood and Human Services Director Clara Long said. "He consistently accepts challenges and new projects with confidence, and his skills and expertise elevate our department to the highest of standards. Derrick works with the citizens of Escambia County each day and is always positive and friendly.   • 🥳 It's National Public Works Week in Escambia County! 👷♂️ National Public Works Week is celebrated each year on the third full week of May. This year’s theme is "Advancing Quality of Life for All,” emphasizing Public Works’ role in maintaining and improving infrastructure and services that are vitally important in providing a high quality of life for Escambia County residents. 🛠 Our Public Works team works diligently every day to maintain the county’s network of roads and stormwater drainage systems, including right of way mowing, road resurfacing, street sweeping, holding pond mowing and maintenance, sidewalk maintenance, dirt road grading, tree trimming and removal, pothole patching, ditch cleaning, sign maintenance, and the repair and construction of drainage infrastructure. Public Works often responds to calls after hours and on weekends, including natural disaster events such as hurricanes and severe weather. As the Public Safety PIO, Wood represents each division, including EMS, Fire Rescue, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards. He manages media inquiries and interviews for each division, manages social media, and writes press releases to share department news stories, hiring opportunities, severe weather alerts, and more. 📝 In addition, Wood regularly seeks training opportunities to hone his skills as a PIO. He has completed numerous FEMA courses and attended workshops to gain a deeper understanding of crisis communications, citizen engagement, disaster response, and media relations. He is a FEMA-certified Public Information Officer, a member of the Florida Public Relations Association Pensacola Chapter and a graduate of Leadership Pensacola Class of 2022. 🙌 “I’m incredibly honored to be recognized as Escambia County’s Employee of the Month,” said Wood. “This would not be possible without the support of my coworkers and supervisors from Community and Media Relations and Public Safety.
