Our newest blog, "In the Meantime: Beginning Long-Term Recovery on Maui," highlights the efforts of two retired women, Kalani Holokai and Cathy Paxton Haines, who are leading fire recovery efforts on #Maui on behalf of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i and Episcopal Relief & Development following the devastating Lāhainā fire of August 2023. Both women emphasize the ongoing emotional and physical toll of the disaster on the community. Earlier today, I participated in a sobering conversation about the crisis in Sudan. Sudan is currently the site of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Over 10 million people are displaced. By some estimates nearly a half of the population needs humanitarian support. Delivering #humanitarianaid from outside Sudan is complex, as the warring parties won’t allow access to those in the greatest need. While international NGOs have largely been shut out, local humanitarian actors are stepping up. The world needs to focus on the depth of local responders to meet needs. While we are not currently active in Sudan, Episcopal Relief & Development understands the importance of “#localization” in reaching the most vulnerable, particularly during humanitarian crises. This is something our partner, Islamic Relief USA, who are responding in Sudan, understands as well.   #EpiscopalRelief #IRUSA #Sudan #WorkingTogether

🚨UNDERSTANDING THE 3️⃣PHASES OF A DISASTER 🦺 Most disasters have three distinct, sometimes overlapping phases: Rescue, Relief and Recovery. Understanding each phase will help you give the right support at the right time. 🛠️PHASE 3️⃣: RECOVERY 🛠️ During Recovery, the emphasis is on repairing houses and buildings and returning survivors to self-sufficiency. In this phase, out-of-town volunteers are sometimes welcomed and the community knows what kinds of items they need and can receive. The challenge of the Recovery phase is that most of the television cameras have moved on, but the human suffering has grown. The Church excels in this phase because we are part of the communities that have been impacted, and the relationships we’ve built even before a disaster remain in place for years it will take to reach a new normal. https://lnkd.in/eQvGGU3u
