About us

The mission of English for New Bostonians and the English Works Campaign is to increase access to high-quality ESOL classes for adults in Boston and across the Commonwealth. Our Vision: Boston will be a welcoming city that offers immigrants the opportunity to learn English and integrate into all aspects of civic life. Through significant and coordinated investments by the public, private and non-profit sectors, adult English language learners will be able to learn English at home, at work, or in the community and fulfill their dreams and roles as citizens, community members, parents, workers, and entrepreneurs. The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) system will offer flexibility; will take into account differing learning styles, formal education levels, and student goals; and will include evaluation and accountability measures to ensure program quality. Our Approach: English for New Bostonians (ENB) is a public-private-community collaboration addressing the urgent need for increased English language learning opportunities for adult immigrants in Boston. Comprised of the City of Boston, foundations, corporations, non-profits, and community organizations, ENB works to support high-quality, accessible ESOL programs; to expand Boston’s capacity to serve English language learners; to test new strategies to reach learners at home, in the community, and at work; to encourage new investment by diverse stakeholders; to heighten awareness about the importance of adult English language learning; and to support the development of a coordinated ESOL system in Boston.

  • Immigrant parents' involvement in their children's education is crucial for their academic success. This is a victory for immigrant parents, children of immigrants, ESOL teachers, school principals, and all advocates! ENB takes pride in spearheading this advocacy and is delighted to see it come to fruition! Thank you to all city councilors and every Bostonian who spoke in support of this! Together, we amplify the voices of immigrant parents, and THEIR VOICES ARE HEARD!

Late night ESOL Victory! By an 11-2 vote, Boston City Council voted forward a budget override which will provide $300K for parent ESOL classes. In a super tight buget year, this speaks to the importance of parents’ voice in their kids' education and of immigrant families in our city. Prior to voting, councilors shared their own experiences as English learners themselves and as kids of immigrant parents, and the stories they've heard from their constituents. Grace and gratitude to all the parents, ESOL teachers, school principals, advocates and English for New Bostonians staff who fought for this for two years and to the Councilors who led with their hearts and cast their votes "yes" or "si." • Please join us in welcoming and applauding our interns! Firstly, a big shout-out to Celina Chen! Celina joined us at the end of spring and has quickly become an invaluable member of our team. She has been instrumental in our most recent Language of Food event, our spring appeal, and our upcoming Spring update. We can't wait to see what more we achieve together this summer. Next, let's recognize Logan Cosgrove, who has been a valuable addition to our team, particularly in our RFP process. Logan also stepped up to assist with our Language of Food event and our latest spring appeal. We look forward to achieving more with you this summer. Last but not least, we want to acknowledge Angela Gattone! Angela will be leaving us soon, but during her internship, she has made a significant impact on our entire team. Angela was integral to our Development team and English Works program, and her helpful presence could be found wherever assistance was needed at ENB. Her absence will be felt, and we wish Angela all the best in her studies and future endeavors, confident that she will continue to achieve great things. Let's give a round of applause to all our interns for their hard work, dedication, and positive energy. Your contributions are truly appreciated, and we look forward to making the most of the remaining summer days together!

  • English for New Bostonians is proud to lead the English Works for Newly Arrived Immigrants initiative empowering newcomers to Massachusetts with essential English skills crucial for our labor market. Recently featured on Telemundo, “English Works” is in partnership with state government and now includes over 1,150 students, mostly from Haiti, who are currently residing in emergency assistance shelters. They're passionate about learning English in order to secure employment, support their families, and fully participate here in the Commonwealth. Lulu, a mother from Haiti who is enrolled in the English Works program, told the reporter, "I need to speak as much English as possible. If you don’t speak English, they tell you ‘learn English first, and then you can apply for the job.’ Oh it feels so bad. It gives you a headache. I need to work." English Works for Newly Arrived Immigrants is part of Massachusetts' strategy to assist the large influx of immigrants arriving due to crises in their home countries. Helping individuals like Lulu learn English allows them to prepare for the job market, integrate successfully into the workforce, and ultimately become economically self-sufficient. Thank you Telemundo and Mercedes Paris for this coverage! Link to video: https://lnkd.in/gfqzV2Wz

  • Thank you for an inspiring evening yesterday at the Language of Food! We would like to take this moment to extend our appreciation to everyone who made this possible. Special thanks to our sponsors (Eastern Bank, Verizon, Santander Bank, N.A., Beth Israel Lahey Health, Social Equity Access Fund, & UG2), donors (corporate, individual, and in-kind), special guests, our amazing host Amaka Ubaka, volunteers, staff, and everyone who was there in person or in spirit. The energy, cheers, and connections were the testaments to our potential to create lasting changes for our immigrant brothers, sisters, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. See you again next year! Photo coming soon....
