Empowering young people, creating brighter futures.
About us
Founded in 2000, EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with local organisations in emerging market countries, and other change-makers, to enable marginalised young people to transform their lives and communities. We support local organisations in emerging market countries that provide youth with the tools, skills, and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives. What Makes EMpower Unique? -Concentration on emerging market countries, where communities are many times marginalised and left out of economic booms. -Focus on young people during a critical time of transition and the three key building blocks for their future: education, health, and livelihoods. -Open dialogue: EMpower engages donors in decisions about grants and forms trusting conversations with grantee partners about the issues they face and their solutions. -Streamlined, transparent, and highly cost-effective grantmaking model: 100% of funds raised from individuals goes directly to our grantee partners. -Multifaceted and long-term support: we don't just provide financial resources to our grantees, but partnership, networking, and learning opportunities.

The EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation SA fellows and I ended June on a powerful note by completing the Mental Health First Aid training, facilitated by Amanda van der Vyver from COMMUNITY KEEPERS Over three days, Amanda guided us through seven comprehensive modules, covering the mental health state of South African children, trauma, referral pathways, care resources, basic listening skills, crisis management, ethical care, confidentiality, consent, and more. This training was genuinely one of the best we’ve attended!. We gained practical and relevant knowledge. Amanda’s expertise and facilitation created a safe space for deep reflection and discussion. We were encouraged to reflect on past experiences and gained new tools to improve our response methods in similar situations. Even after the training, our conversations continue. With the tools and resources provided, we feel incredibly empowered and are excited to share and apply our Mental Health First Aid skills in our respective environments. #MentalHealthTraining #FirstAid #YouthDevelopment #Empowered #SelfDevelopment

Last month, Ria Landingin and I represented Lunas Collective at the Perkumpulan Pamflet Generasi (Pamflet) and EMpower—The Emerging Markets Foundation Community of Practice. During this event, we had the privilege of connecting with dedicated SRHR development workers from Vietnam and Indonesia, gaining valuable inspiration. Although I've facilitated workshops for international audiences before, this experience marked my first time implementing the "Open Space" concept outdoors. Bringing our participants outside and actually use and apply the "Open Space" idea. I'd have to admit, the idea of bringing people outside was heavily inspired by the bike workshops I've been doing for the past few months 😄 This approach not only encouraged us to break away from traditional workshop setting but I guess it also supports our idea of "third spaces" a place where we can interact with members of our community and even turn strangers into friends. Not only did we enjoy our time discussing the concept of Consent, Pleasure and Clean Language, we were also moved by the grassroots efforts of East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) where we met young people actively campaigning against child marriage in their community. What a meaningful and relaxing work trip has it been. Matur suksma, Bali! 📷 Pamflet

Recently, EMpower's AwareNest Community of Practice (CoP) in East Southeast Asia met for the first time in Tulamben Village, Bali, for an enriching two-day in-person engagement on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. This in-person exchange—the first of its kind led by partners in the region, provided a fantastic opportunity for organisations across ESEA to come together, share insights, and collaborate on solutions to common challenges.
