Check it out! Our very own Paul Gronke, Elections & Voting Information Center (EVIC)'s Founding Director and Political Science Professor at Reed College, is a cover boy! 🤩 Paul has been profiled by Sarah Lloyd in the June issue of Reed Magazine, a Reed publication for alumni of the College.
The piece, titled "Vote of Confidence: In an age of misinformation and voter mistrust, Prof. Paul Gronke is delivering the data," steps through Paul's career at Reed, the formation of EVIC almost two decades ago, and the many Reed students who contributed the Center's #ElectionSciences work along the way including Reed alumni Jay Lee (Reed '19 & current democracy researcher at Sightline Institute) and Paul Manson (Reed '01 & current research assistant professor at Portland State University - Center for Public Service ).
The profile also digs into EVIC's marquee research that was spearheaded by Paul and EVIC in 2018 and continues today - the annual Local Election Official (LEO) Survey. Several data points from EVIC's LEO Survey program are highlighted in this piece. (A great time to mention that the 2024 LEO Survey will be arriving via e-mail and USPS mail to over 3,100 randomly-selected LEOs in all 50 states from mid-July to mid-Aug 2024 with results to be shared by EVIC prior to Election Day!)
Finally, Paul talks about his future after a three-decade plus career in academia and the future of EVIC.
_____
These next three paragraphs are taken directly from the profile:
Gronke, facing four years of 50- or 60-hour workweeks, is stepping away from teaching to work full time at EVIC, though he will remain on faculty as emeritus professor.
“For the external world, nothing will change,” he explains. “I will still have a Reed affiliation, a Reed office, and for all intents and purposes, will be exactly the same person . . . My plans are to continue to work to support and advance safe, secure and accessible elections, to develop pedagogical materials to encourage students to consider elections work, and, I don’t know, to probably just continue to do what I’ve been doing.”
EVIC’s future lies partially at Portland State University, where its research director, Paul Manson, is on the faculty of Hatfield School of Government. Moving forward, the center will be co-led at both Reed and PSU, expanding its capabilities and ushering in graduate research assistants.
_____
So, this means instead of prepping for class, grading papers, and mentoring Reed students on their theses, he will have more time for #ElectionScience research - as well as baking, gardening, kayaking, running, music, photography, and most importantly - critiquing airline service on from his X (formerly Twitter) account while traveling the world!
X jokes aside, CONGRATULATIONS to Paul on an incredible career thus far! We are thrilled to have more of his time to devote to EVIC's research for the benefit of the elections community.
