Trusted Science for Safe Food
About us
Science, safe food, sustainability. EFSA is a decentralised agency of the European Union with headquarters in Parma, Italy. The agency was set up in 2002 following a series of food crises in the late 1990s to be a source of scientific opinions and advice on risks associated with the food chain. Our work forms the basis for the European policies and legislation in the food safety area. Our scientific remit covers: food and feed safety, nutrition, animal health and welfare, plant protection, plant health, and the possible impact of the food chain on the biodiversity of plant and animal habitats. EFSA employs around 565 staff members and works alongside over 1500 external experts. If you are interested in a career at EFSA and wish to contribute to food safety in Europe find more about our work and how to engage with EFSA here on LinkedIn or on our website. Disclaimer: We welcome your feedback but please be aware that we may not always be able to take part in discussions. The best way to reach us is through the Ask EFSA service on our website (Contact us > Ask EFSA), which will provide an individual reply to each request. 📢 We've updated our guidance on doing risk-benefit assessments of food This update takes on board recent developments and experiences in the field, preparing for future assessments of the benefits of fish consumption and risks from dioxins and other environmental contaminants. Key highlights of the updated framework: 🔹 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩-𝐛𝐲-𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡: Maintains a comprehensive method for combining human health risks and benefits from food consumption. 🔹 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Emphasises need to involve risk-benefit managers when integrating health risks and benefits as these often require value-based judgements. 🔹 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬: Health effects can be assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively, with metrics including Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs), and probabilities of relevant effects. 🔹 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Introduces methods for assessing multiple chemical hazards and health effects impacting different population subgroups. 🔹 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: of hazardous and beneficial food components. 🔹 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Details measures of effect size, dose-response modelling, and the characterisation of adverse and beneficial effects. 🔹 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Incorporates variability, uncertainty, severity, and ranking of effects. 🔹 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: providing practical guidance on reporting and offers guidelines for effectively communicating RBA outcomes, considering consumer perspectives and responses to advice.
