Earlier this summer, it was a joy to help lead the Educating All Learners Alliance and New America event focused on students with disabilities and AI policy. Thank you to Treah Hutchings, Elena Silva, Amelia Vance and the PIPC team, and An-Me Chung for their leadership and collaboration. This newly released policy paper is designed to inform and guide policymakers at all levels, from local school boards to national education departments, who are responsible for shaping education policy in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). On May 7th, the Educating All Learners Alliance and New America convened educators, school administrators, parents, disability rights advocates, researchers, government, industry, and privacy experts to delve into the opportunities and challenges of deliberately designing and implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to uphold civil rights protections for students with disabilities. Through insightful presentations, dynamic group discussions, and productive breakout sessions, attendees shared their expertise, intending to identify best practices and crucial issues in using AI in education to support students with disabilities.
