[WATCH NOW] The idea that diagnosis is a single event that happens at a single point of time by a single healthcare provider is a common misconception—one that doesn’t account for the complex, multifaceted system of patients, family members, providers, and technologies. In this episode, Victor Lane Rose, Executive Director, of Aging and Ambulatory Care at ECRI, discusses diagnosis and describes why patient, family, and caregiver participation is especially important in diagnosing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In the latest edition of TechNation, ECRI shared insights on “Incident Management and Investigation: Mastering the Process.” The cover story features ECRI’s 7-point approach to manage and investigate healthcare incidents from beginning to end. The IMI Plan includes (1) awareness, (2) response, (3) fact gathering, (4) analysis, (5) conclusions (6) recommendations, and (7) legal considerations. “Hospital errors are the third-leading cause of death in the United States. After an incident occurs, it becomes imperative that a comprehensive investigation is completed to prevent recurrence and limit risk to the organization. However, missteps and gaps in the process, or a lack of investigation experience and resources, can leave organizations open to recurrence and costly claims,” says Barbara Malanga, director, preventative solutions and device safety operations-device safety at ECRI.” Read the cover story for ECRI expertise: https://hubs.la/Q02DWMx10

Patient safety and the uninterrupted supply of health-related products must be prioritized in policy discussions about trade restrictions and tariffs. ECRI submitted comments in response to the US Trade Representative (USTR)’s solicitation for input on proposed tariffs affecting $18 billion worth of goods manufactured in China, including medical products. ECRI urged the USTR to carefully consider potential adverse impacts of trade policy on patient safety as it relates to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and healthcare supplies. It is critical to ensure the availability of medical products, such as syringes and their accessories, personal protective equipment, and other essential medical supplies. PTSD can be difficult to treat, as trauma-focused psychotherapy can be distressing, leading patients to avoid or discontinue treatment. 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is being evaluated as a means of enhancing PTSD psychotherapy by temporarily reducing the stress of processing traumatic memories. In clinical trials, it was reported that MDMA significantly and safely improved symptom relief achieved with psychotherapy, with effects lasting up to a year.
