Most of the #renters I speak to these days see no clear path to #homeownership. What's new is that most of them aren't looking for one. Renting is not only cheaper than owning a home in most places today, it also gives renters back time in their day (maintenance is the landlord's job!) and flexibility if they need to move for some reason. Now, they're embracing these benefits and seeing renting it as the choice that it is, recently illustrated beautifully by this article in The Wall Street Journal from Veronica Dagher and Rachel Wolfe. Not making a value judgment one way or the other....homeownership is still great for lots of folks. But, renting is also great for many, depending on what they need and what they want to do with their money. Too much of the rent data we see in the press is incorrect...either sharing data from antiquated data collection approaches or showing a part of the market and hoping it's representative of more general market movements. In particular, all of us at Dwellsy have always been frustrated with the level of focus in our government on in-place rents. This is a little like asking a consumer what the groceries in their cupboards are worth. It's just not the same as if you went to a supermarket and priced what it would cost to buy groceries from the source. Glad to see Ben Casselman at The New York Times focusing on this issue. Ever since publishing "Everything Renting," I've had amazing opportunities to help renters improve their knowledge and have more success renting, but this one was special to me. Today, I was back at my alma mater, Vassar College (after far too long) with a Renting 101 curriculum to help graduating students understand and navigate the rental process, most for the first time. Thanks to Jannette Swanson, Michelle Quock, Luis Inoa, Stacy Bingham, Lorelei Essman-Freeman, and Dwellsy's own Lena Stevens and Hannah Hildebolt for making this happen. The sun even came out for a few minutes while I was taking a favorite walk through the campus. What more could I ask for?
