Today, as we proudly celebrate #Juneteenth, we're looking back on the history of the holiday and what it means to our nation and the African American community. On Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln's #EmancipationProclamation officially went into effect—freeing all enslaved people within Confederate states. While this was a significant moment in U.S. history, it is important to understand that the impact of the proclamation was not immediate. Most people remained unaware of the proclamation until federal troops arrived in Confederate states and seized control. Only then was the knowledge of freedom truly shared with those who had been freed. This was a slow process, as the war continued and states in rebellion were absorbed back into the Union. It took until June 19, 1865, for federal troops to reach #Galveston, Texas. The state hadn't seen much action during the Civil War, so slavery continued there without interference. Once General Gordon Granger arrived, however, freedom officially came to Texas for the 250,000 people who were still enslaved. Slavery had ended, once and for all. The following year, the free people of Texas celebrated "Jubilee Day" on June 19. Over time, this holiday eventually became known as "Juneteenth" (a combination of June and nineteenth). Naturally, Texas became the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1979. Several others followed suit over the years, but it wasn't until June 17, 2021, that the holiday became a federally recognized observance. This important day in our nation's history has gone unrecognized for too long, and we are proud to celebrate it here in Charlotte. Today, we change our Crown to the colors of the Juneteenth flag in celebration of the freedom that all people so rightly deserve. Happy Juneteenth, Charlotte!
