A staggering 85% of those with intellectual disabilities are unemployed. Creative Spirit creates integrated employment.
About us
Creative Spirit is a non-profit 501c3 organization devoted to creating integrated employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Our mission is simple: to create and support the successful placement of individuals with IDDs at the most creative, forward-thinking companies in the world. Creative Spirit was born and is dedicated to providing the opportunity for employers to be matched with individuals who are loyal, enthusiastic, qualified, and bring a new kind of energy to any organization. The goal is to create 1 million jobs during this decade, for the upwards of 10 million adults with IDDs in the US alone who are currently unemployed—a staggering 85% of ready, willing, and able adults. In doing so, we will change the face of what true diversity in employment looks like via advocacy, awareness, and most importantly, action. Currently, less than 15% of those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs) who work are subject to significant pay gaps or go unpaid altogether. This is a global crisis, and likely the most profound human rights employment issue of our time, yet it goes unsolved.

Thank you Lisa Colantuono for your championship! We where honored to be included and greatful for your contributions. Let’s keep celebrating brilliance in all forms together. #HireDifferent
What originally started as an idea for a “gal’s night out” turned into the eighth annual AAR Partners’ Mad Women on Tuesday night. ~35 wonderful ad industry women raised their glasses in support of each other, shared stories, made new friends and supported a wonderful charity, Creative Spirit US. Together we raised over $1,200 to continue helping young adults with intellectual disabilities. If you’d like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated: https://lnkd.in/g3iaEYKb? Thank you to all the great gals who braved the heat, joined the event and made Mad Women 2024 one to remember! Laurel Rossi Andrea Sullivan Joanna McElnea

Almost 35 years ago, the #AmericanswithDisabilitiesAct (ADA) promised much greater accessibility in public spaces for millions of Americans. Unfortunately, the U.S. Capitol still lacks physical accessibility, creating challenges for many Congressmembers with disabilities. That might soon change with the installation of drop-off and pick-up zones that could help those legislators and make it easier for them to meet with constituents, including those who have disabilities as well. #Neurodiverse students deserve equal opportunities to succeed in both education and employment post-graduation. That’s why we’re troubled to learn about a decision this month by the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania striking down a Department of Education directive allowing students with disabilities to remain in school until age 22. This decision leaves hundreds of families in limbo about the educational futures of their children, and is at odds with an #inclusive and ethical society. A newly released annual report from the U.S. Department of Education has found that complaints of disability discrimination in U.S. schools are at their highest point in six years, according to DisabilityScoop. To address these complaints, disability rights organizations are now pushing for greater funding for the Office of Civil Rights. This is a vital wake-up call to improve inclusion and accessibility for students who are #neurodivergent, especially given that success and inclusion in education is strongly tied to finding employment post-high school. I created the original Neurodivergent Umbrella graphic almost four years ago to demonstrate who is included so I’m sharing a new design again as a reminder. Neurodivergent has always included all mental health conditions, no ifs, no buts. Some important things to know: Neurodivergent was coined by Kassiane Asasumasu, a biracial, multiply neurodivergent activist in 1999. You can identify as neurodivergent and find your differences or experiences distressing or disabling and/or want and need medication. It isn’t a clinical term, a medical term, a diagnosis or most importantly, another tool of the pathology paradigm. It’s an identity. For many people, neurodivergent is about rejecting the belief that we have a disorder or mental illness. While neurodivergent is meant to be a neutral term that describes how we diverge from neuronormativity, it’s important to acknowledge that neuronormativity centers whiteness and therefore, neurodivergent may not be an identity that fits or align for the global majority. If you’re a Black disabled person, I would like to offer NeuroExpansive by @ngwagwa to explore x We do not say: ❌ diagnosed with neurodivergence ❌ neurodivergent condition We do say: ✅ neurodivergent person ✅ neurodivergence You can hire me for a talk or workshop if you would like to learn about the key concepts, purpose and history behind the term: https://lnkd.in/gRBPB4WK
