A nonprofit trade organization fostering the growth and success of craft maltsters and the greater #craftmalt community.

About us

Formed in 2013 by eight craft malthouses, the Craft Maltsters Guild emphasizes quality and craftsmanship as a requirement for success. We believe that maltsters have the ability to influence positive changes and improvements in the malting industry through knowledge and communication. The Guild's mission is to promote and sustain the tradition of craft malting in North America, provide services and resources to the Association’s members, and uphold the highest quality and safety standards for Craft Maltsters. We define Craft Malt as follows: 1. Small: A Member Malthouse produces between 5 metric tons (5.5 US tons) to 10,000 metric tons (11,000 US tons) per year. 2. Local: Over 50% of grains are grown within a 500-mile radius of the Member Malthouse. 3. Independent: Each Member Malthouse must be independently owned by a 76% majority of ownership.

Happy #MalthouseMonday! Meet Subversive Malting + Brewing, located in the Village of Catskill, NY. Since 2018, they have been crafting beers with a sense of place from 100% locally sourced ingredients. They are a true farmhouse brewery driven by a passion for native ingredients. As both brewers and maltsters, Subversive focuses on selecting its raw materials from top to bottom, brewing beers inspired by its available malts, and making malts for the beers they want to brew. While drawing inspiration from a variety of breweries and styles from around the world, they seek to create beers driven by their ingredients that are made to exist outside of traditional style guidelines.

Today’s #MalthouseMonday shout-out goes to Carolina Malt House. Since 2015, this Cleveland, NC malt house maintained a passion for fostering a connection between farmers, breweries, and their shared communities, which they celebrate with their annual Brewers Field Day and Harvest Party. This year's event took place in May when Carolina Malt House hosted brewery professionals from Cleveland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia to celebrate local agriculture, hang out, sample each other’s beers, and see firsthand how the malt they use in their beer is grown and processed. As a former Extension Educator, I'm a sucker for a good field day, and let me tell you, there was a GOOD field day in St. Paul earlier this week. So glad I had the opportunity to drive down to campus to check out the great work at the University of Minnesota in their pursuit of #betterbarley. Not only did I get to touch base with several researchers the American Malting Barley Association supports through our grant program, but I also got to see many of our industry members. To top it off, we all got to engage in a participatory breeding program exercise to help Kevin Smith narrow down his barley selections for the year. Would love to see the delta on that with reality! Barley acreage may be down in Minnesota, but the ongoing research in this state is top notch.

In our next webinar, Invisible Hazards of a Malthouse, participants will gain new insight in areas where low frequency, high impact incidents occur and have a better understanding of the resources available to tackle these unique challenges. Our guest speaker is Jeremy Armstrong, the Regional Safety Manager for Rahr Corporation. He oversees the safety program for two malting plants, one trucking division and five warehousing facilities across Canada. Join us on Thursday, July 25 at 3pm ET! It's #MalthouseMonday! This one goes out to Root Shoot Malting for their work in the regenerative agriculture space. You can literally find them on the Regenerative Farmers of America map! Here are three suggestions from Root Shoot's that you can do to support regenerative agriculture too: ☝️Support your local regen farmers. Find a farm near you on the map at our link in bio! ✌️Support regen companies. Shop for healthy, high quality food to help build a resilient food system. Find a local brewery who uses craft malt grown regeneratively! 👌Spread awareness. Watch a documentary, take a course, read a book, and tell your friends... over a pint of beer ... with regeneratively grown malts, of course! 😉

What's an often forgotten but incredibly effective strategy for building demand for craft malt? We'll go first. TOURS! Beer and spirits lovers love to visit farms, and see behind the scenes of malthouses. Giving them this access is both memorable, and educational too. Do you offer tours (to the public) at your farm or malthouse? Tell us in the comments!

"Small ingredient providers are seeing changes and adapting, but how each has been affected is as varied as the businesses themselves," says David Nilsen in a recent PorchDrinking.com article about small growers of hops and grains, and maltsters too. He interviewed our President Hillary Barile of Rabbit Hill Farms, and also cited malthouses that have reported growth during the recent industry lull: Grouse Malt House, Rustic Brew Farm, Sugar Creek Malt Co.
