Last Thursday, project team member and Structural Associate, Jason Whitney, P.E., S.E., helped tour the AIA Seattle Mass Timber Committee through our Asa Mercer International Middle School Replacement project. A shining example of mass timber construction, the new Beacon Hill school will accommodate 1,000 students in grades 6-8. “I really enjoy bringing mass timber to PreK-12 projects. The user excitement is so rewarding and it’s a pleasure giving tours and sharing the product with the AEC design community. At Asa Mercer International Middle School, one of the most striking and prominent design features are the double height sloping timber columns that utilize tie rods to reach down and support the second-floor framing. This feature required thoughtful planning and coordination with the architect and contractor to get it right. Great work by all parties to make concept sketches into a reality.” - Jason Whitney, P.E., S.E., Structural Associate. Asa Mercer International Middle School is expected to open Fall 2025. Civil and structural engineering firm focused in the Pacific Northwest
About us
WHO WE ARE Coughlin Porter Lundeen is a civil and structural engineering firm. Focused in the Pacific Northwest, we partner with clients across markets to bring unique project visions to life. We were founded with the goal of exceeding the standards and services provided by engineering firms, and today, more than twenty-five years later, that vision continues to guide all that we do. WHAT WE DO We provide an exceptional product in our drawings and designs, but to us, “exceeding standards” means much more. It means understanding a project’s big picture and employing a comprehensive vision to lead and manage coordination among design partners and contractors. It means streamlining the process. It means being accessible, authentic, and genuinely invested in every project. Quality and exceptional service are the cornerstones of our business, which is why we take the time to get things right- every drawing, every detail, every time. HOW WE DO IT We approach engineering differently. We choose projects that require imagination and ingenuity, and see ourselves as much more than a traditional consultant. Our team functions as a key part of the core team, regularly exceeding the standard scope of our discipline and redefining what it means to be an engineer.

Happy “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day!” On this important day, we want to honor the incredible team behind the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance. Led by female investors and designed and constructed by a team of more than 80% women, the Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance is the first practice and training facility built exclusively for a women's professional athletic team. “Not only is this facility a groundbreaking achievement and a significant milestone for women’s sports in America, but before this project, I had never imagined encountering an AEC design team that consisted of 80% females. It was fascinating to witness how quickly we let our guards down, allowing the team to bond early on and resulting in one of the best collaborative environments of my career.” Jackie Sempel, Civil Associate Principal. We are honored to be on this women-led team, and others like it, such as the region’s first carbon net-neutral collegiate facility at Western Washington University, Kaiser Borsari Hall. https://lnkd.in/g8b_BduM Cheers to the many women who are breaking boundaries, dispelling stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations!
