  • Join us next week in a new edition of our 'Expert Q&A' Membership Series, this time with Fashion Biodiversity Consultant Q&A with Dr. Mirjam Hazenbosch 🍃 ABOUT MIRJAM: Dr Mirjam Hazenbosch is a Senior Consultant at the UK’s leading corporate biodiversity consultancy, Biodiversify. She is an expert on biodiversity sustainability in the fashion industry, with more than a decade of experience in biodiversity conservation. At Biodiversify, Mirjam works with fashion brands including Primark and Kering — owner of Gucci, Balenciaga, and Yves Saint Laurent — to design effective strategies for nature and develop sustainable value chain solutions. ⭐ WHY WE'RE INTERVIEWING MIRJAM: The fashion industry takes a huge toll on biodiversity. Biodiversity is essential for sustaining life on Earth. Yet, the connections between fashion and biodiversity — as well as potential solutions for the industry — are not spoken about enough. Based on her work, Mirjam is able to speak to the impacts on biodiversity from the fashion sector, and how the industry can make adjustments to become more environmentally sustainable. In October last year, Mirjam worked on the Textile Exchange’s Biodiversity Landscape Analysis which set out a blueprint for the fashion industry to take increased environmental action. • “Based on my senior design skills, the obvious choice was to do better at a design level and make better quality clothes. But my main fixation was trying to tackle the fashion problem from a consumer perspective. On the streets, I noticed people fiddling with their necklines and wearing ill-fitting clothing made from horrendous fabric. I realized that I needed to focus on helping people make better choices for themselves. These are the stepping stones that led me to Biekaleidoscope. Now I help women curate their wardrobes by working with what they already have, making better choices, buying less but better, and creating artwork from clothes that hold memories.” -Biek Speijk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 💬 We spoke with Conscious Fashion Collective Member Biek Speijk, a seasoned fashion designer turned upcycling artist and wardrobe curator about the biggest misconceptions when it comes to developing personal style, how to shift mindsets toward more sustainable ways of engaging with fashion, and how self-awareness and personal wellness are key elements in creating a more sustainable wardrobe. 🔗 Read Biek’s insight on these topics and more! in the full Conscious Fashion Collective Member Spotlight: https://lnkd.in/ekdX6fdr 👩🏻💻 Connect with Biek inside the Conscious Fashion Collective Membership: the global ecosystem for sustainable fashion professionals and entrepreneurs: https://lnkd.in/eaMMkHF7 #consciousfashion #consciousstyle #slowfashion

  • "What we fail to understand is that you can’t just take one plant, plant it around the world, and expect it to be the most sustainable fiber. The most sustainable fibers are those native and local to the areas you grow them in. Right now, the way agriculture and a lot of our farming systems are is just large fields of the same crop. So we're noticing a lot of people going back to more ancient, Indigenous wisdom — whether it's regenerative agriculture, permaculture, or agroforestry. I was always wondering why we couldn't apply this to the fashion supply chains. Why aren't we focusing on restoring the ecosystems that we live in, but through native fibers that can be used to create clothing? That's something that a lot of tribes have done in the past. That’s why I started emphasizing the need to indigenize supply chains." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stella Hertantyo interviewed Niharika Elety in the Conscious Fashion Collective Membership about: -Why we need to indigenize fashion supply chains, -The biggest barriers when it comes to making sure that fashion is a medium for cultural sustainability, -How to incorporate ethical profit sharing into a sustainable fashion business model, -And mindfully marketing garments in a way that balances the need to sell products and make money, without encouraging overconsumption. 🔗 Read insights from our interview with Niha here: https://lnkd.in/ehKyupV9 Inside our membership, you'll find the full recording with more insights from Naika (and get instant access to other expert Q&A recordings, workshops, live events, and connect with a values-aligned community): https://lnkd.in/eaMMkHF7

🙋♀️ If you've been craving deeper *connection* and ongoing *accountability* for your big sustainable fashion career or biz goals... We have a major announcement at Conscious Fashion Collective! 🎉 We will be launching "Connect Groups" inside the CFC Membership. These are *hand-matched* groups of no more than 4 members who are on a similar career journey as you. 🌱 These groups will meet monthly for accountability towards their goals and connection about challenges, career experiences, and beyond. 💚 The reality is that we are ALL looking for more (and better) connection with each other, but the fear of reaching out and the headache of sorting out logistics just get in the way of actually making those connections happen. 🙃 These groups are designed to take away those barriers: ➡️ We are matching up groups of people who have raised their hand to say they're in! You're meeting with others you know WANT to connect with you, too. ➡️ We have set the dates and the times so all you have to do is show-up. No going back and forth on your calendars for weeks until you just kinda give up. **The deadline to sign-up for these groups inside of our membership is July 4! Meetups will start the following week. ✨ Sound like something you'd be interested in? 🌿 Learn more & join the CFC Membership: https://lnkd.in/g-jttEue Comments and DMs are open if you have any questions 🤍

  • 📈 Fast fashion has normalized exploitation for the sake of exponential growth. But we know we know that this cannot continue. In this discussion, we’ll explore where brands should begin when it comes to building ethical supply chains, how to approach ethical production research, why community development is as important as living wages, and how to practically engage stakeholders (civil society, trade unions, and the private sector) to ensure that their perspectives are included in decision making. ⭐ WE’LL BE DISCUSSING: -The biggest issues and challenges in building people-centered fashion supply chains. -What progress has been made when it comes to creating more ethical supply chains in fashions. -Ethical supply chain audits. Are they reliable? And what precautions brand owners can take if they aren’t based in the country they are producing in? -The practicalities of building ethical supply chains – community-led solutions, engaging stakeholders, geographic differences, community development, and what is needed beyond living wages. -What role fashion law and policy play in creating more people-centered supply chains. And what the implementation of this looks like. -How we can include not only garment workers, but artisan communities too, in this people-centered vision. 🗣️ PANELISTS: Anjali Purohit (CFC Member and Founder of artisan-made sustainable brand, @Studio Variously) Sheela Ahluwalia (Director of Policy and Advocacy at Transparentem) Donna Marshall (Professor of Supply Chain Management at University College Dublin, and Co-Director of Fashion's Responsible Supply Chain Hub) Register for this exciting conversation here: https://lu.ma/dpoowycj #supplychain #sustainablefashion #fashionsupplychain
