The largest volunteer-based free health clinic in the nation, serving uninsured Chicagoans for more than 30 years.

About us

Founded in 1993, CommunityHealth is dedicated to serving the uninsured and underserved in Chicago and surrounding communities. We provide over 17,000 medical and dental visits for more than 10,000 patients every year. This level of care is made possible thanks to the time and talent of more than 1,000 volunteers, including 350+ providers (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, counselors, etc.). CommunityHealth’s main facility, the Lederman Family Health Center, is located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. In 2010, we opened a satellite in Chicago’s south side Englewood neighborhood — a community with great need and limited resources. As the largest volunteer-based free medical facility in the United States, we offer demonstrated success and an innovative model for providing compassionate and comprehensive medical and dental care to the uninsured. If you are interested in supporting CommunityHealth, you can be sure that your donation is truly making a difference. That’s because every dollar we spend translates to more than $8.00 in care delivered. As a totally free, volunteer-based organization, we receive no reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, or third-party payers. We rely on support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and institutions for more than 95% of our revenue. CommunityHealth simply could not exist without your commitment.

Revolutionary leaders learn with, from, and through communities served, prioritizing continuous and reflexive growth. Congratulations to our Chief Executive Officer, Steph Willding, MPA, for being selected into Leadership Greater Chicago’s 40th Class of the Signature Fellows Program with a network of cross-sector civic leaders and changemakers immersed in major socioeconomic issues facing the community and build connections that facilitate solutions. Using the city as a classroom, participants learn through interactions with private, public and nonprofit decision makers, and work as a group to develop critical thinking, analytical, governance and leadership skills. CommunityHealth is devoted to meeting our communities where they are at through leadership committed to sustainable, inclusive, and progressive change.

Assistant Professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

TOMORROW (7/24) 12:00 pm central join me for the AASM Foundation Grand Rounds where I'll be sharing my experiences and lessons learned while founding and running a free sleep clinic with CommunityHealth Chicago. Started as a response to the racial disparities encountered during the pandemic, the free sleep clinic (www.chi-pap.org), which redistributes donated sleep equipment and supplies to low-resource patients across the Chicagoland area, has been a proof-of-concept that equity-targeted initiatives can succeed and make real change in patients' lives. ow.ly/EJSH50SzWo5

CommunityHealth shines the Volunteer Spotlight on Dulce Brousset during July ⭐ Dulce started volunteering with CommunityHealth in 2020 when the clinic first started remote interpreting. As a long-time, cherished volunteer, Dulce not only trains new interpreters and volunteers at CommunityHealth and another organization, but she is frequently requested by physicians to support translation during appointments. She even led a presentation during the Interpreter Engagement Club on how to become a professional interpreter. For her culturally competent and compassionate care, Dulce was awarded 2023 Clinic Volunteer of the Year for Spanish Interpreting for the 2023 Volunteer of the Year Awards. CommunityHealth is more than a free clinic thanks to our health education team in its community outreach at likeminded organizations, weekly wellness workshops, new patient registrations with a language access guarantee... and our Patient Advisory Council 🗯️ The Patient Advisory Council is a safe, empowering space for patients to contribute to CommunityHealth's strategic growth, ensure culturally competent care, and build community with one another. The Patient Advisory Council meets quarterly in Spanish to discuss quality of care metrics, best practices for patient recruitment, and the ongoing changes in Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). "“We can say what we feel, think, and want for the community.” - Maria Cecilia Magna, patient at CommunityHealth and member of the Patient Advisory Council Learn more about the Patient Advisory Council, their goals, and their achievements at https://lnkd.in/gBpMgdp6 🏥

CommunityHealth is excited to open its third microsite, community-based clinic and its fourth location by the end of 2024. We are meeting our patients where they are at, in their own neighborhoods, and in their native languages. This year's All In™ Celebration will highlight this innovative care model with the theme of "Health Care Closer to Home" on Thursday, September 19th, at The Carter from 5:30-9pm. The event will also present a public service award to Senator Tammy Duckworth for her support of free and charitable clinics. You are invited to help us lead the fight for access by sponsoring the event, providing essential and comprehensive health care for as many as 60 patients for an entire year. ALL INsiders are leading the fight for access by sponsoring the essential health care for as many as 20 patients for an entire year. CommunityHealth turns every $1 donated into $7 worth of services and medications. As the largest volunteer-based free clinic, serving the uninsured, underserved, and undocumented, our ALL INsiders are essential toward building a system where everyone has access to the right health care, at the right time, in the right place. Thank you to Janet Conneely, Keith Graff, Mary Harington, John Koenigsnkecht, Dr. Babs Waldman, Steph Willding, MPA, and Sally Benjamin Young for making quality health care for all a reality.
