The leading non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through screening for colorectal cancer

About us

The Colon Cancer Coalition started with one Get Your Rear in Gear race in 2005. What started as one women’s vision has since grown into a national coalition of people determined to end colorectal cancer deaths by increasing screening and educating others about the signs and symptoms of this treatable disease. We want all people to understand their risk factors and get the right screening at the right time. Based in Minneapolis, Minn. the Colon Cancer Coalition is dedicated to encouraging on-time screening and raising awareness of colorectal cancer. The organization’s signature Get Your Rear in Gear® run/walk and Tour de Tush® bike ride series are volunteer-led in communities throughout the United States. In 2017 the organization granted over $1 million dollars back to these local communities to build and sustain programs promoting early prevention and screening, as well as patient support services for this disease. Our grants fund colorectal cancer education, awareness, and prevention programs, colorectal cancer screening initiatives, colorectal cancer patient navigators, as well as support for colorectal cancer patients and their families. By making the words colon, colorectal and colonoscopy a part of the everyday language, we believe we can overcome the fear and decrease deaths from this largely preventable cancer. For more information visit ColonCancerCoalition.org. Mission Statement Empower local communities to promote prevention and early detection of colon cancer and to provide support to those affected.

Colorectal cancer is the #2️⃣cancer killer for both men and women in the United States, and on-time screening for colorectal cancer can save your life. But did you know? Colonoscopies aren’t your only option - colonoscopies can be daunting, and may not be right for everyone. FIT testing (an at-home, non-invasive, stool-based screening option) works by detecting small amounts of blood in your stool. When completed annually, FIT tests are a great choice for busy patients or those who may choose not to have a colonoscopy. 🔍 Let’s take a closer look at available screening options: Colonoscopy: Considered the gold standard for detecting colon cancer, a colonoscopy involves a gastroenterologist using a scope to examine the colon for polyps or cancer. Sedation options are available for comfort, and any detected polyps are removed and sent for further examination. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and is repeated every 10 years with normal results, or more frequently if needed based on findings or family history. CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): This screening test uses a special x-ray to examine the colon for polyps or cancer. It requires a full colon prep but does not need sedation. If abnormalities are found, a follow-up colonoscopy may be recommended. It’s repeated every 5 years with normal results. Sigmoidoscopy: Similar to a colonoscopy but focusing on the rectum and part of the colon. It’s a shorter procedure, lasting 10-20 minutes, and requires a full colon prep. If cancer evidence is found, a colonoscopy is typically recommended. It’s repeated every five years with FIT/FOBT every three years. Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT): Utilizes antibodies to detect blood in stool. It’s performed once a year. High Sensitivity Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT): Screens for blood in stool and is performed once a year. DNA Stool Test (e.g., Cologuard): This FDA-approved at-home test detects blood and certain DNA mutations in stool samples. It’s repeated every three years or as advised by your healthcare provider. Blood Test: For average-risk patients unable or unwilling to undergo a colonoscopy or FIT, a blood draw at the doctor’s office is an option. It’s performed once a year. With so many options, there’s no reason to skip your screening – talk to your doctor about which screening options may be best for you! 💙 #coloncancer #coloncancerawareness #colonoscopy Colon Cancer Coalition
