Providing Hope for the Future since 1924.

About us

“City Union Mission depends on the partnership of friends and supporters so we can continue to grow with the changing needs of the community and ensure that those who are poor, homeless or under-served throughout the metro area have the opportunity for a better life.” — Terry Megli, Chief Executive Officer Since 1924, City Union Mission has provided warm beds, nutritious food, and a place of safety for thousands of poverty-stricken and homeless men, women, and children. Founded by Rev. and Mrs. David Bulkley, the Mission's staff has been uncompromising in their commitment to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the hurting and the lost. City Union Mission receives no government support and is not a United Way agency. The Mission depends completely on the gifts of God's people--individuals, churches, groups, foundations, and businesses who care about the poor and homeless. As our community partners together, we are impacting the lives of our hurting neighbors and providing hope.

City Union Mission continues to demonstrate success in Adult Education with 86% of all long term program participants achieving at least 1 NRS level gain (2 grade levels) in Reading before versus after programming. The gain in Math was 43%. Many thanks to our professional adult educators on staff and dedicated volunteer tutors. Higher literacy and numeracy help establish vocational success and are an important part of whole person, gospel-centered Christian ministry.    I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. - Psalms 32:8

We had the honor to thank the electricians in person from Local IBEW 53. They have been donating to City Union Mission for close to 25 years and are having a huge impact in our neighborhood. Their donations go towards feeding, sheltering and providing case management to our homeless in Kansas City. Thank you for caring for our community!

The men in our Christian Life Program (CLP) recently had a beautiful spring hike at Mill Creek Streamway Park in Shawnee. We observed chestnut and oak trees as well as flowering honeysuckle, dogwood and redbuds. The 3-mile loop was also great exercise with 6,500 steps for everyone. The outdoor portion of CLP is a part of the Wisdom Pyramid, a new curricular piece, incorporating nature, beauty, and literature into daily life. "How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all." —Psalm 104:25

Premium Waters donates water to hundreds of causes that support community efforts. Recently Premium Water, in Riverside, contacted the Mission with a very generous donation. We provide shelter, food and water, on average to 220 individuals each day. This donation helps us give hope to the hungry and thirsty.

Mission founders, the Rev. David Bulkley and his wife Beulah regularly visited the poorest of poor families that lived in the East Bottoms and North End in the 1920's. The filth, malnutrition, and spiritual devastation were heartbreaking for Beulah. Some fifty years later she wrote of the stark poverty they had witnessed— "I wish I could forget the first slum I ever entered. The frail little mother had done the family wash in a tub and had poured the dirty water on the floor of the one large room, and was trying to mop it clean. The room served as a living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedroom. The mother asked us to be seated, but we could not sit down. After we prayed and offered an invitation to the family to attend the Mission, we left. The picture of dire poverty and the bugs crawling on the walls and floor would not leave our minds." The Bulkleys soon moved the family to a large clean, basement flat, and like so many others, they received physical, emotional and spiritual healing.
