🤝 🌍 The City Climate Finance Gap Fund and the C40 Cities Finance Facility are pleased to announce their strategic #partnership, allowing Gap Fund partner cities to access CFF’s proven #CapacityDevelopment tools and approaches to support project preparation and #AccessToFinance. Today we kick-off with our first joint workshop – the City Academy on Finance and Equity (CAFE) in Casablanca, Morocco. Over the next 4 days, city officials will learn useful concepts, concrete approaches and #tools to plan #sustainable and #equitable #infrastructure projects and transform cities’ innovative ideas into bold climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create resilient and liveable cities. The thematic workshop on #WasteManagement and #EnergyEfficiency welcomes more than 30 delegates from 9 cities, including Casablanca and Zenata (Morocco), Elbasan (Albania), La Marsa (Tunisia), Makindye (Uganda), Mansa (Zambia), Nikśič (Montenegro), Nyamira (Kenya) and Ojodu (Nigeria). During the welcoming remarks, Ingrid Simon, CFF’s Programme Co-Director (C40) stressed the importance of moving forward together to achieve greater results. The Gap Fund-CFF partnership also explores #matchmaking opportunities and provides the CFF with a potential pipeline of projects for late-stage support. About the CFF: The C40 Cities Finance Facility is a project preparation facility that serves as a link between cities and finance to support a green and just transition. The CFF supports cities to develop sustainable and equitable projects that address climate change. Planning, financing, and implementing #low-carbon slum upgrades: vital for #urban #climate #mitigation. Around 1 billion people living in slums globally face disproportionate #climate #impacts because they live in poor #housing in #disaster-prone locations, with inadequate #services. We know the role that slum #upgrading can play to support #climate #resilience in these #urban areas. Yet we know far less about how slum upgrading has a vital role to play in #supporting climate change #mitigation. The #Gap Fund is helping to bridge this knowledge gap. Slum areas often have a lower #carbon footprint than other #urban areas, namely because of how densely people live, often in precarious in insalubrious conditions and limited access to basic services. But #emissions from untreated wastewater and solid waste in these areas can be considerable. People in slums with poor #public #transport also often have to rely on vehicles that use #fossil fuels inefficiently. ‘Business as usual’ #slum upgrades run the risk of increasing #emissions. Using real-life examples of best practice, our #technical analysis on ‘Low-carbon slum upgrading’ shows how collaborative, #green approaches to construction, waste management, water and sanitation, energy, land use and transport #policy and #practice can support #climate mitigation, create #jobs and #transform lives. From formal #climate #finance mechanisms to sector-specific grants and subsidies, we outline some of the concrete steps needed to plan for and #implement #low-carbon #slum upgrading. What technology solutions are cities around the globe investing in to support climate mitigation in buildings, transport, and solid waste and how can these be deployed in urban areas in low- and middle-income countries? These questions are explored in a recent technical note titled "Smart City Solutions for Climate Change Mitigation" published by the #GapFund in collaboration with the Global Smart City Partnership Program. Link here: https://lnkd.in/gs6JMgXD The note explores for example, the ‘Internet of Things’ technology in buildings that can dynamically adjust temperatures to reduce energy consumption. Dynamic road pricing and curb management technology can help fine-tune traffic and parking in real time, reducing transport emissions. Public transit operators can use software that is already widely used by private ridesharing services to provide service that is more responsive to demand. Smart waste bins equipped with sensors that monitor their fill level, weight, and location in real time can optimize waste collection, reducing transport emissions, and can also minimize overflowing bins, littering, and illegal dumping, which can indirectly reduce methane release. These are just some of the technologies that the note explores. The note is part of a series of technical notes produced by the City Climate Finance Gap Fund which aim to explain topics related to cities and climate change to practitioners working in low- and middle-income countries. Other notes in the series so far explore the relationship between urban form and GHG emissions, how to reduce embodied emissions in building construction, how global data sets can help cities estimate their GHG emissions, and many other topics, with more to come soon. 🌍 🚊 Last week our team had the chance to participate in an inspiring roundtable organised by MobiliseYourCity Partnership in Brussels. Together with representatives from the European Commission, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, KfW and Agence Française de Développement, and other partners, we discussed the challenges public and private actors in the #GlobalSouth are facing in mobilising investment for #sustainablemobility projects. As the City Climate Finance Gap Fund we are actively playing our part by supporting the conceptualisation and early-stage preparation of #lowcarbon and #resilient urban mobility projects in low- and middle-income countries. Meetings like this one are essential to align approaches and maximise the impact of our interventions!
MobiliseYourCity strongly believes that prioritising funding transport infrastructure in the Global South is essential! 💰 📈 The Global Infrastructure Outlook predicts that nearly $50 trillion will be needed in transportation investments by 2040. Much of this investment is required in cities, especially in middle-income and developing countries. 💨 The transport sector accounts for 23% of global emissions and 30% in developed countries, with emissions still rising. $2.7 trillion per year is needed for low-carbon transport pathways by 2030, with 60-70% in emerging economies. Yesterday, in Brussels, we hosted a Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) Roundtable with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Key stakeholders discussed the urgent need for international collaboration to fund the Global South's transport infrastructure. It was highlighted that private sector involvement is crucial as public funds fall short. Initiatives like the #GlobalGateway and G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII)- aiming to bridge the gap by providing financial support and fostering collaboration- are more and more needed! #HSCConference #HSCRoundtable #InfrastructureInvestment

Last month the City Climate Finance Gap Fund (Gap Fund) was invited to contribute its technical and operational expertise on low carbon and resilient cities at the Technical Deep Dive on Cities and Climate Change in Tokyo and Kyoto, organized by the World Bank Tokyo Development Learning Center (TDLC). This week-long training event brought together government officials from 8 countries – Argentina, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, and Türkiye – to learn from Japanese cities, and from each other, about urban climate change mitigation and adaptation. This action-packed week was full of great presentations, fascinating site visits in Tokyo and Kyoto, as well as passionate exchanges between our enthusiastic participants and invited experts from Japan and beyond.
