Lessons from a new, learning-oriented independent evaluation of our Forest Investment Program (FIP) will be key to informing CIF’s future programming. While the evaluation found that FIP has been crucial to forest management globally, the study recommended that CIF pay greater attention to scaling mechanisms, systems thinking, and sustainability planning that explicitly engages with the relationships between small—and large-scale interventions to improve forest management and economic benefits. CIF is a pioneering multilateral climate fund delivering low-cost finance to over 80 developing countries.
About us
CIF is one of the world’s largest multilateral funds helping low- and middle-income countries adapt to and mitigate climate change. Since 2008, it has been channeling funds from government donors and the private sector to support more than 360 projects in over 80 countries. Its launch emerged from recognition by world leaders that climate change and development are inextricably intertwined, and that climate-smart investment is needed at scale to deliver on the opportunities for green growth identified in the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Working in partnership with governments, the private sector, civil society, local communities, and six major multilateral development banks (MDBs), CIF provides highly competitive financing that reduces risk for investors, lowering barriers to piloting new technologies, scaling up proven solutions, opening up sustainable markets, and mobilizing private sector capital for climate action. Rallying stakeholders behind increasingly ambitious climate goals and complementary action, CIF draws in diverse partners who might otherwise be deterred from investing alone.

A new independent evaluation has found that CIF’s Forest Investment Program (FIP) has supported and strengthened forest management and empowered Indigenous People and local communities through direct funding through its Dedicated Grant Mechanism. The learning-oriented study also provided important lessons for future climate finance programs, such as recommending that CIF pay greater attention to scaling mechanisms, systems thinking, and sustainability planning that explicitly engages with the relationships between small—and large-scale interventions to improve forest management and economic benefits. The mid-term evaluation found that FIP has: ✅ Brought almost 36 million hectares of forests under sustainable ✅ Benefited almost 3 million people ✅ Strengthened forest governance in 8 countries ✅ Helped 4 countries unlock REDD+ payments Download the evaluation today ⤵ https://lnkd.in/e96n9eWA Neha Sharma, Hanna Schweitzer, Indufor Ltd, Jeffrey Hatcher, Jessica Kyle, Daphne Yin, Sam Allnutt, ICF, Blair Freeman, Rasmus Heltberg

Six countries are demonstrating how planning for a #justtransition can be put into practice. #Angola, #Colombia, #Egypt, #Mongolia, #Türkiye, and #Uganda are using CIF’s Just Transition Planning Toolbox to pilot sector-specific projects. From AI-identified green skills in Egypt to channeling agri-finance to local communities in Mongolia, the pilots are a collaboration with our multilateral development bank partners. The Climate Investment Funds is pioneering the world's first joint operational Multilateral Climate Fund (MCF)-supported investment program addressing climate resilience. 🚀 We're proud to be working in collaboration with our multilateral development bank partners, Asian Development Bank (ADB), African Development Bank Group, Inter-American Development Bank, IFC - International Finance Corporation, and The World Bank and our fellow multilateral climate funds, Adaptation Fund, Global Environment Facility, and the Green Climate Fund. Building on the momentum from our inaugural workshop earlier this year, many of our partners convened this week in Tokyo to advance the design of the Climate Resilience Investment Program. Discussions focused on the prioritization of country leadership, integrating resilience into planning/fiscal cycles, how to strengthen private sector engagement, and easing processes for developing countries' access to climate finance at scale. Thank you to the Japan - The Government of Japan's Ministry of Finance and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for hosting us!
