It's official. Chicago's piping plover chick now has a name: Nagamo! The Ojibwe word for "he/she sings," the selected name is a nod to both one of the many indigenous peoples of our region but also the piping plover common and scientific name which distinguishes it as the "singing plover." Thank you to everyone who submitted your name suggestions and our naming committee who whittled down the hundreds of entries to 1. You can read the full official statement below: The Chicago Piping Plovers, a collaboration between the Chicago Bird Alliance (CBA), the Chicago Ornithological Society (COS), and the Illinois Ornithological Society (IOS) is happy to announce that the Piping Plover chick hatched to Imani and Sea Rocket at Montrose Beach Dunes on June 30, 2020 has been named Nagamo by a selection panel representing Chicago’s diverse communities. This is the first year that Imani, Monty and Rose’s son, and Sea Rocket, a captive-reared Piping Plover chick released at Montrose in 2023, have nested at Montrose Beach Dunes. Four chicks hatched to the pair, but sadly only one survived. The surviving chick was banded with a USDA metal band on the upper right leg. Mike Doty submitted the selected name, Nagamo (Na-GA-mo). Nagamo means “he/she sings” in the Ojibwe language. The City of Chicago is located on land that is the traditional homelands of the Anishinaabe, or the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations. Piping Plovers are known for their “pip-lo” song that fills summer beaches and that is represented in both their common name as well as their scientific name Charadrius melodus. On the day of the name selection, Imani and Sea Rocket’s little chick was heard piping. CBA, COS and IOS are deeply grateful for the efforts of the many who have made nesting and hatching of Piping Plovers at Montrose Beach Dunes possible: the Chicago Park District, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the US Department of Agriculture, the Great Lakes Piping Plover Conservation Team, and the Montrose Beach Dunes steward and volunteers, and last but not least, the over 100 Chicago Piping Plover volunteers who stood watch from sunrise to sunset for weeks on end to monitor the nest and plovers. We are grateful to the Chicagoland community for so readily embracing the Piping Plovers and providing their enthusiastic support. About the selection panel The selection panel consisted of members of nature and environmental organizations in the Chicago area.
