A year ago, I took on a new role at Freire Schools by pitching the idea of creating an “internship” program. They took a chance on me knowing what it could mean for the students we serve, and I left the classroom to focus on all things career exposure for our charter school network, Freire Schools. Following in the footsteps of my late great father, who was a successful business owner and connector helping many underrepresented people find work, I knew that I had to do something and take advantage of a missed opportunity that I needed to tap into for our students. Our students deserve every and any opportunity they can get from the city that surrounds them and that is what we set out to do. After a year of planning, networking, raising money, collaborative meetings with Philadelphia Financial Scholars, and execution, our vision morphed into a two-week paid job shadowing program aptly named an “Experienceship." During the program's launch, our first cohort of 30 students from TECH Freire and FCHS, selected from over 75 applicants, were immersed into the Experienceship. They took part in soft skills lessons led by me; an Improv leadership course led by Will Dennis of UnScripted Productions; six days of job shadowing at 11 different companies/organizations; and lastly, before they accepted their paychecks, created presentations about their experiences and the lessons they learned. This important work wouldn’t have been possible without our 30 dedicated students, the partners who took a chance with us(listed below), and the leadership of Freire Schools. By all accounts, it was a great experience for our students, partners, mentors, and also myself. I can’t wait to expand it and run it back again next year!
