Together we can do more than any of us alone.

About us

Empowering the San Diego business community to collaborate, face-to-face, about social impact initiatives that make San Diego a better place to live, work, and play. Over the past few decades we have left the issues of improving our communities mostly up to the government and the non-profit sector. The traditional business community has typically been a funder and participated on nonprofit boards. That is no longer good enough. It is time for business leaders to become more active in social impact initiatives. It is time for them to take some of their time and energy and focus it on making San Diego a better place to live, work and play. The next generation of workers are demanding this and our communities need it. But it is not as easy as it should be: there are many disparate organizations making progress, but the business community doesn’t have a cohesive picture. The Cause San Diego's Cause Conference will shine a light on the people and organizations that are driving change. This is a single day and place that will bring together business leaders (both for-profit and nonprofit), gov’t, education, impact investors, philanthropists, and more to learn about what others are doing and create opportunities for collaboration. This is the second year the conference is focused on the broader business community and we look forward to making our 25th Annual Cause Conference THE place to be for Social Impact in the years to come.

Check out how much emotional content is in the ‘limiting narratives’ diagram & article Andreas has summarized! How often have each of us ‘felt’ some of the same? And in those moments- would more information have swayed you? Likely not! This is why approaches intended to create climate action based on information provision are simply not going to be effective. We need to engage the whole brain, not just the logical/processing regions. It’s high time we completely reassess our approach to climate policy, communication, reporting, and corporate engagement. We must structure interventions to 1) support how the emotional, human brain reconciles its position, 2) identify ‘empowering narratives’ & 3) use them strategically to address discourses of delay that are hampering climate action. We’ve got to promote radically more positive and hopeful responses to debate surrounding climate action. There is no other path if we expect to help humanity surmount traps of time lags, tragedy of the commons etc, alter existing systemic power dynamics, and increase public agency. The article suggests deliberative processes as the way forward, but I prefer play-based. They’re untapped, unexpected & more likely to engage, reframe & leapfrog the paths that limiting narratives have entrenched us upon. Not to mention: fun 🤩

New research looking into why people support climate action but then do not act. Main finding: While people in principle support a low-carbon lifestyle, entrenched public discussions of climate delay are limiting peoples' beliefs that a low-carbon future is possible. The study identifies four 'entrenched' public narratives of climate inaction (see image). Many people draw on elements of these narratives and thereby generate defensive responses to discussions of low-carbon lifestyles. This undermines the public's belief that change is possible and fair... Such research is critical as it moves beyond just looking at peoples' intentions. For instance, very recent studies show: (1) the vast majority of people want governments to take stronger climate action (80% across countries - https://lnkd.in/d2CxjiFV) and (2) a majority of people are willing to pay for climate action (69% across countries - https://lnkd.in/d-jndW4M). BUT, we need to understand much better why these intensions do not translate into individual behaviour change - such as lifestyle choices and, most of all, voting behavior... == Full Study (open access): https://lnkd.in/dFyH2ceG #climatechange, #esg, #sustainability, #climateaction

Thank you, Burnham Center for Community Advancement for hosting this enlightening forum discussion today. Today sparked new passion, resolve and commitment to refine how we do business - better education, funding strategies and bringing together all sectors. This isn't a job for government alone. It takes each of us to work together. Shout out to Lucky Duck Foundation CEO Drew Moser, Regional Task Force on the Homeless CEO Tamera Kohler, The City of San Diego COO Eric K. Dargan, Downtown San Diego Partnership VP, Policy and Civic Engagement Josh Callery-Coyne and County of San Diego Director, Homeless Solutions Dijana Beck. #endinghomelessness #workingasateam #sandiegohomelesssolutions

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” - Buddha Today, the Burnham Center for Community Advancement (BCCA), led by Tad Seth Parzen, held a very informative and action-oriented forum discussion focused on educating leaders about the solutions and challenges charitable orgs, government and corporations have when it comes to preventing and ending the cycle of homelessness in the San Diego region. Three Points Stuck with me after this engagement: #1 Education: All speakers agreed we aren't doing a good job communicating success stories to increase trust for more shelter/tiny housing solutions; we aren't communicating our service offerings to those who need the support b/c too much communication is focused on funders and colleagues working on the issue; also, we are not cross-communicating enough about how to align our goals and objectives towards more housing solutions #2 Politics: This is a humanitarian crisis and politics has nothing to do with whether people should suffer on our streets, under bridges and in tent camps. I don't know of a person, regardless of political leaning, that will say we should not do a better job preventing and ending homelessness. #3 Funding: All speakers agreed that we need to better align our funding priorities to the most urgent prevention and homeless reduction needs in our region. This will take sacrifice, compromise and all stakeholders, across sectors, to align their goals, objectives and strategies to truly reduce our unhoused crisis over the coming years. It's not if we can do this. It's do we have the WILL to do what needs to be done. I'm on board to help bring all sectors together to review how funding is currently allocated, what areas may need less funds and which need more. Also, which areas need more personnel and which ones can reduce staffing. Again, it's going to take compromise, sacrifice and a willingness to put our egos aside. We have human beings, children malnourished in one of the world's wealthiest cities. We must do better. Let's go. Thank you to Eric K. Dargan, COO for the The City of San Diego, Dijana Beck, Director of Homeless Solutions, County of San Diego, Josh Callery-Coyne, VP, Policy & Civic Engagement, Downtown San Diego Partnership, Tamera Kohler, CEO for the Regional Task Force on the Homeless & Drew Moser, CEO for Lucky Duck Foundation for sharing your insights, challenges and responding to our community concerns. Also want to thank Voice of San Diego investigative reporter Lisa Halverstadt for moderating this important conversation. Keep asking hard questions and demanding more effective solutions! #homelessness #sandiegohomeless #homelessprevention #affordablehousing #housing4all #causesandiego

Whether it's the music industry, fast food, tech, agriculture or offering consulting services, every industry has an opportunity to plan and execute their businesses in an eco-friendly and social good manner. Check out this example about Coldplay. #socialimpact #causesandiego #musicforsocialgood

Sustainability is becoming an important topic in industries that you wouldn’t even expect it to be. The music industry is experiencing a shift towards sustainability and sustainable concerts are no longer rare. More and more artists are focusing on using their platform and influence to support causes for the environment. This is significant because traditional concerts and music festivals are known to be wasteful and to consume excessive energy. Coldplay and Billie Eilish are just a couple of examples of artists who are making sustainability a priority in their musical careers. Coldplay reduced their CO2 emission by 59% in their most recent tour and planted 7 million trees (one tree per concert goer). Billie Eilish’s vinyls were all made of 100% recycled compound. She also founded Support + Feed, an organization that addresses climate change and provides plant-based food at concerts. This effort resulted in the Happier Than Ever tour, which helped save 8.8 million gallons of water. Do you know of any other artists that are making a positive impact on this industry?  #sustainability #musicindustry #sustainable #sustainablebusiness
