Presenting: Carbon180's 2023 Annual Report. Last year, the carbon removal field struck a new level of maturity (the Carbon Negative Shot, first round of awards for DAC hubs, landmark land policy like ARACI, and millions of federal $ for ocean CDR research + MRV). Carbon180 followed suit: we stood up new teams + brought on new experts, published our first paper on ocean CDR, entered the second year of our regranting pilot, elevated the role of land-based CDR, testified in front of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and much more. Read on below 🤓

A very warm welcome to the new members of C180’s EJ Advisory Council 🤩 These experts hail from our regranting program’s first cohort & will now stay on in advisory roles, helping us define just CDR — and how we can best integrate it into C180’s strategy and policy work. We're so excited to continue cross-learning & collaborating with: LaTricea Adams, MAT, Ed.S. (founder, CEO, and president of Young, Gifted & Green™), Elizabeth Holloway (carbon removal project manager at Appalachian Voices), and Alexander Spike (climate justice coordinator at Air Alliance Houston). Our aim is to foster an environment where C180 & advisors can stay connected, learn from each other across disciplines, share honest feedback & recommendations, and identify opportunities where Carbon180 can amplify EJ in the CDR field. For more information on the deep well of expertise that each council member brings to this work, check out their bios on the C180 team page!

As a newer industry, carbon removal can make salary transparency part of its DNA from the start. The folks at CDRjobs have taken that mission in stride, most recently with the launch of their salary survey. This short, anonymous survey will help CDRjobs establish an early baseline from clear + tangible salary data, which will be publicly released in July. Setting industry benchmarks for compensation is a key to creating accessibility and equity in the field. If you’d like to take part, be sure to answer by June 23rd!

Cheers to my incredible colleague John Milko and his thought leadership on demand-side policies to grow CDR.
⚡ NEW REPORT: The Procurement Toolbox. Here’s our vision for a world where the US government is carbon removal's top customer. We demystify what “good” demand-side policies can do — set high standards, cut costs, bolster innovation — and offer tools to build them. You can also hear straight from author John Milko at our Thursday, 6/13 webinar. He'll dive into the report's biggest takeaways and then shift to a live Q&A with the audience. 📅 RSVP here: https://bit.ly/45ax3rg

The conversation in CDR right now is all about demand: 1️⃣ an expectation that sustained, reliable demand for high-quality CDR will solve a lot of the other challenges: innovation/cost curve, finance/contracts, workforce, MRV etc. If you buy it, they will come. 2️⃣ recognition that VCM purchasing is not a sufficient demand pull to solve these issues. 3️⃣ concern that govt procurement is also not enough, in part because it would be politically infeasible to buy removals at climate-relevant scale. But procurement (a category, not just one specific policy) is important for a lot of reasons beyond near-term volume of purchases. Really excited for John Milko's work to expand the container of this conversation.
🧰 Launching on June 11th, "The Procurement Toolbox” is a playbook for policymakers. As the largest purchaser of goods and services globally, the US federal government has a unique ability to shape markets, set standards, and drive innovation. Our multi-year vision, drawing from existing policies and procurement strategies, aims to harness this power to catalyze carbon removal efforts and drive down costs. Join us for a live discussion and Q&A with author John Milko next Thursday. He’ll delve into the federal government's role in scaling carbon removal and how procurement can set the stage for more ambitious policies to accelerate CDR deployment. 📅June 13th, 1-2 PM ET 📍 Virtual, via Zoom Bring your questions and join the conversation!

💰Join Carbon180 next Thursday for a webinar on federal procurement of carbon removal! We've authored a report (👀 keep an eye out early next week) that provides 10 core building blocks of strong CDR procurement across technology and land based solutions, and explores how procurement can exist as dedicated, standalone programs or as integrations in existing initiatives across the federal government. We’ll dig into the report during the event, with time for questions with the lead author, John Milko You can register here: https://lnkd.in/gtjXcQic
