Thank you for your continuous support Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund!
With nearly 12% less FAFSA completions among the 2024 high school class compared to the last academic year, the California Student Aid Commission’s (CSAC) work to develop trusted and relatable messages to persuade students and families toward applying for financial aid is more important than ever. California Student Aid Commission reposted this
I had the pleasure of attending Marlene Garcia's retirement party at the Julia Morgan House at Sac State. After listening to all the speakers, a common theme stood out: her passion, integrity, mentorship, drive, fearless leadership, role modeling, and more. During my limited time at California Student Aid Commission, I noticed how the team operates with these great qualities under Marlene's leadership, with student-focused discussions central to all decision-making at CSAC. I greatly appreciate all the outstanding work Marlene has done for CSAC and public service. Thank you, Marlene, for your wisdom, support, and endless encouragement. As you move on to this new chapter of your life, know that you leave behind a legacy of excellence and compassion. Wishing you all the best in your retirement, Marlene. May it be filled with joy, relaxation, and new adventures. #CSAC

CalMatters wrote up a story on the innovative social media work we have been up to at the California Student Aid Commission. It's been an honor and privilege to contribute to the transformation of our channels over the years. "The number of followers across the commission’s social media channels has grown prodigiously this past academic year. Last year it had 5,200 followers on Instagram and 800 on TikTok. This May, those grew to 58,000 followers on Instagram and 35,000 on TikTok." When we first started pouring into social media efforts back in 2020, we barely had a social media presence. We didn't have a TikTok, a content team, or even a defined brand. In fact, there wasn't even an Outreach and Marketing unit when I first entered this space. Since 2020, we have rebranded, created an Outreach and Marketing team, and have become trusted financial aid figures on social media. It's been a full circle experience to be able to lead in this space as a former recipient of financial aid myself. I was only able to afford college and graduate school because of the financial aid I received. As we continue pouring into this space, I want to offer my thanks to our rockstar team, our management chain including Marlene Garcia, Jake Brymner, Catalina Mistler, and of course the various Commissioners involved. I would also like to extend my deep gratitude to the various organizations that have funded these efforts through philanthropic funds. The California Student Aid Commission and our outgoing Executive Director Marlene Garcia honored me earlier this month by naming me the CSAC Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2023-24 fiscal year. This award recognizes my work to bring financial aid content directly to our constituency via social media, and my project management during the Better FAFSA rollout. I'm honored and totally surprised to receive this award! My management team Michael Lemus, M.S., Jake Brymner and Catalina Mistler have all advocated for me as I have advanced CSAC along new horizons with diverse communications strategies. To be recognized for my hard work means so much to me. #HigherEd #FinancialAid
