The Department of Education (ED) has officially said that this year’s Free Application for Federal Student aid (FAFSA) will not open until December, two months later than usual. The delay comes as the result of a huge overhaul of the federal form that students use to apply for financial aid to help pay for college. An exact date in December has not been announced yet. #financialaid #collegeadmissions #collegecounseling #collegeadvice #collegesanduniversities https://lnkd.in/eVerhtAM

Robert Farrington highlights one of the fundamental issues with the unfolding FAFSA Fiasco: confusion about how the SAI is used. 😕 😖 Unless I'm missing something (please tell me I am!!), it seems the confusion starts at the source: The Federal Student Aid an Office of the U.S. Department of Education web site page "What is the Student AId Index": "This number is not a dollar amount of aid eligibility or what your family is expected to provide. A negative SAI indicates the student has a higher financial need." OK, that's logical. An index is not a value to to be added or subtracted. However, in the NEXT sentence, the SAI is presented as a value: "The college or career school will determine your financial need by subtracting your SAI from the cost of attendance." So, Cost of Attendance - SAI = Financial Need ❓ 🍎 🍏 and 🍊 🍊❓ The cost of attendance is a dollar amount. The SAI "is not a dollar amount." No wonder there is confusion. The questions: Who will straighten this out? When? Good insight in Forbes #fafsa #fafsafiasco #financialaid #departmentofeducation

A new FAFSA setback means many college financial aid offers won't come until April Families and students will have to wait even longer for financial aid offers from colleges and universities. On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Education announced yet another delay in the already-turbulent FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) timeline: The department says it won’t be sending students’ FAFSA data to schools until the first half of March. Previously, it had said it would start sending that data in late January. #FAFSA #Federalstudentaid #highereducation #collegefinancialaid #collegeadmissions https://lnkd.in/esWkhNxT

Attention NASFAA members - We need your immediate help to protect student aid funding! On July 13, the House Appropriations Committee released its education funding proposal for fiscal year 2024, with cuts far steeper than required by this summer’s debt ceiling agreement. The bill calls for significant cuts to federal student aid programs that support millions of students, including eliminating the Federal Work-Study and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant programs. With the House Appropriations Committee scheduled to consider the bill as soon as tomorrow, July 27, it is critical that your representative hears from you about how these cuts will impact your students. To make it easy for you to take action now, we compiled the following resources: ▶︎ Instructions on how to contact your representative ▶︎ A sample letter that can be customized with your information and used when you reach out to your representative ▶︎ Additional talking points that can be used for background as you engage in conversations with lawmakers Learn more about what's at stake and access our resources to take action and protect your students' access to higher education: https://ow.ly/gBLu50Pl6wa
