Founded in 1885, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) serves as one of the nation's largest, and most diverse correctional departments. Our mission is to facilitate the successful reintegration of the individuals in our care back to their communities equipped with the tools to be drug-free, healthy, and employable members of society by providing education, treatment, rehabilitative, and restorative justice programs, all in a safe and humane environment. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the when the final stronghold of over 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas were declared free by the U.S. Army. Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, Juneteenth has been an official holiday in the state of Texas since 1980. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 and California state holiday in 2022. Today we're commemorating #Juneteenth2024.
