Creativity destroys everything. Creativity fixes everything. This year Caldera didn't just show up at TEDxPortland for team day, we showed up as a Community Partner. TEDxPortland shares a common values system with Caldera, which was founded by Dan Wieden and his family 27 years ago, since then Caldera has grown into a space and place where young people come to unlock the explosive power of creativity, unleashing their power on the world. Caldera believes creativity is a delightful chaotic force that changes the world of the people who use it and changes the people of the world who are open to it.  We are honored to be a part of the TEDxPortland community because the Caldera ecosystem is a place and space where every young person deserves the opportunity to become a creative thinker, maker, and doer. I am a 2013 TEDxPortland Alumni and Caldera’s Executive Director and I encourage the TEDster audience to learn more and lean in, if you can… Creativity + Voice + Ideas Worth Spreading = Community Impact

Today Caldera’s community is remembering our founder, and dear friend, Dan Wieden. For the last 26 years of his life, Dan poured his creative energy—and his heart—into building Caldera as a resource to inspire and support youth from underserved rural and urban communities. Today, Caldera is poised to become the destination for developing creative solutions and inspiration to solve our communities’ most pressing challenges, one learner at a time. We believe, as Dan did, that when youth are given access to the explosive power of creativity, they can change their world, and even the world at large. https://lnkd.in/gFUhP4RE

How do you describe what it’s like to be at Caldera Arts at Blue Lake, in the summer? It is more than an arts camp. Even though, walking along just now, I hear African drumming coming from the Ice Rink. And the wind rustling the trees between Tamarack Hall, where the summer staff live, and the Hearth Building - a seven minute walk along a gravel road. I think about the summer learners, gathering each morning, in the shadow of a monumental hearth, circled up to start the day. The wooden floor of the Hearth Building is covered in scuff marks, from 26 years of summer Community Circle and dancing and drumming; winter ceremonial gatherings and spring private retreats. It is more than a residency or retreat. Caldera is an experience of being away from the day to day in order to reclaim one’s creativity - that impulse to embrace the new, to design a thought, to bring forth an idea. For the summer learners (middle school to high school age) it is a safe space, with freedom to fail and enough challenge and trial and error to develop resilience and grit. It’s more than a camp. It’s more than a retreat. It’s more than a residency. It is an intentional immersion, in nature, in community, in order to unlock unlimited possibility. #powerofcreativity
