How do you describe what it’s like to be at Caldera Arts at Blue Lake, in the summer? It is more than an arts camp. Even though, walking along just now, I hear African drumming coming from the Ice Rink. And the wind rustling the trees between Tamarack Hall, where the summer staff live, and the Hearth Building - a seven minute walk along a gravel road. I think about the summer learners, gathering each morning, in the shadow of a monumental hearth, circled up to start the day. The wooden floor of the Hearth Building is covered in scuff marks, from 26 years of summer Community Circle and dancing and drumming; winter ceremonial gatherings and spring private retreats. It is more than a residency or retreat. Caldera is an experience of being away from the day to day in order to reclaim one’s creativity - that impulse to embrace the new, to design a thought, to bring forth an idea. For the summer learners (middle school to high school age) it is a safe space, with freedom to fail and enough challenge and trial and error to develop resilience and grit. It’s more than a camp. It’s more than a retreat. It’s more than a residency. It is an intentional immersion, in nature, in community, in order to unlock unlimited possibility. #powerofcreativity
