  • Our council offers prayers of comfort and healing to the family and friends of Laura Hernandez. Laura was dedicated to serving children through the Scouting program. She led Cub Scout Pack 489 as Cubmaster for several years, including the hard work of keeping the unit program going during the pandemic. She had spent the last few months settling in as an adult leader in Scouts BSA Troop 489. She completed Wood Badge training in 2020. In 2021, she received the Norm Hummell Award of Excellence, an Armadillo District honor recognizing Scouters who provide exceptional leadership to their unit while exemplifying the Scout Oath and Law. This year, she was honored with the Cubmaster's Key for her excellent leadership of Pack 489. • Our council offers prayers of comfort and healing to family and friends of Jasper Augustine. Jasper started his own experience in Scouting in 1968. But his most recent impact can be found in his work as the Chartering Organization Representative at Christ Episcopal Church in Cedar Park. His work in the position was integral to the creation of both Cub Scout Pack and Scouts BSA Troop 2008. Being a Charter Org Rep can be a challenging position, but Jasper handled it with aplomb. He will have a lasting legacy in the youth and families that have enjoyed and will continue to benefit from their Scouting experience in these units. Services are scheduled for Saturday, July 20. • Our council offers prayers of comfort and healing to the family and friends of Dr. Theophilus Painter, Jr. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who lived their life in service of the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law like Dr. Painter did. From his time in the U.S. Navy and later U.S. Air Force during the Korean War to his career in medicine, Dr. Painter practiced the values of Duty to Country and Helping Other People at All Times. He served his Duty to God as a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd. He was an avid outdoorsman, no doubt influenced by his time as a Scout in our council with Troop 20. He would continue to keep in touch with Scouting friends through Troop 20 reunions and lunches over eight decades. A memorial celebration is scheduled for Friday, July 26. • Our council offers prayers of comfort and healing to the family and friends of Eagle Scout Howard Harris. Howard earned the rank of Eagle in our council in 1983 after enjoying time in his troop and Explorer Post. Following his parents’ example of service and living the Scout Oath’s call of Duty to Country, Howard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps immediately after graduating from Austin’s Travis High School. He would go on to be deployed to Korea, The Philippines, Australia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Somalia, Hong Kong, and Okinawa. He served with distinction and was recognized with honors on multiple occasions, including the Combat Action Ribbon with 2 stars, the National Defense Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal with a V for Valor, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with 3 stars, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Korea Defense Service Medal. After his military service, Howard answered the Scout Oath’s call to Help Other People at All Times, serving as an Emergency Medical Technician. Howard was laid to rest on July 11.
