The United States Naval Academy holds the distinction of producing more astronauts than any other institution. There’s another technical school in the Midwest that does a decent job as well…but back to USNA. This past week, the annual USNA Astronaut Convocation set another first when MajGen Charles F Bolden Jr, USMC (Ret) (USNA68) and Col Nicole Mann, USMC (USNA99) were joined by Col Frank Rubio, USA (USMA98) on stage for a conversation on LEADERSHIP. This was the first time a non-USNA graduate was a featured speaker for this event. Last night in Cairns, we had the honour of witnessing history in the making at the panel discussion and preview of "The Space Race," a compelling documentary that chronicles the journey of Black astronauts like Guion Bluford, Ed Dwight, and Charles Bolden. These pioneers defied the gravity of social injustice to reach the stars, serving their country in space while striving for equality on Earth. Our Managing Director, Daniel Joinbee, shared the stage with esteemed panellists including Jamie Seymour and Steve Leib, offering invaluable insights into the evolving aerospace landscape. Daniel spoke passionately about the critical role of STEM education, the importance of investing in the future of Far North Queensland, and the innovative pathways that can meet the workforce demands of the aerospace industry. His perspective underscored our commitment to innovation and the importance of inclusivity and diversity in shaping the future of space exploration. We are immensely proud of Daniel's contribution to this pivotal discussion and grateful for the opportunity provided by Aunty Sharon (Illuminate-FNQ) and Newton Campbell Jr., Ph.D. (AROSE).

#OTD in 1994, the Space Shuttle Discovery launched with Charles F. Bolden, Jr. as Commander. STS-60 was Bolden’s fourth and final shuttle flight. Excelling in all he has done; USMC aviator, test pilot, Vietnam combat pilot, Space Shuttle astronaut, USNA Deputy Commandant, and NASA Administrator, there is no part of Bolden’s life that hasn’t been dedicated to public service and the betterment of humankind.
