The MDC Office of Professional Standards is currently conducting three separate investigations due to the three erroneous inmate releases from the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) this month. While these three incidents were all erroneous releases, each one involves a different set of facts, including the errors that led to the releases. Therefore, each unique incident is being rigorously examined. MDC will provide an update on the investigations at the Aug. 21 Detention Facility Advisory Board (DFAB) meeting at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at Bernalillo County’s administrative headquarters at Alvarado Square (415 Silver Ave. SW). A virtual option is also available.

Introducing Bernalillo County Public Art Program's featured artist of the month, Joe Stephenson! 🖌️ This month, we're featuring the work of artist Joe Stephenson and the Working Classroom project, "La Corriente del Valle." Completed in 2014, this mural is a beloved part of the BernCo Public Art Collection. It depicts the life and culture of the South Valley, capturing the Rio Grande as it flows through past, present, and future identities. The mural features historic images of South Valley farmers, local traditions like the Muertos y Marigolds parade, classic car culture, the burning of El Kookooee, and future visions with solar power and sunflowers. The mural also features embedded technology with QR codes for a more interactive experience! The creation process engaged the community by mentoring young south valley artists aged 12–21 and involving residents in generating themes and imagery for the mural. Lead artist Joe Stephenson is a long-time south valley resident and founder of Working Classroom’s youth-engaged mural program. Come see his work, "La Corriente del Valle" (pictured below), at the South Valley Aquatic Center, 3912 Isleta Blvd SW. Following the inadvertent release of Desiree Sanchez on Wednesday, July 24, the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) is taking additional measures to prevent an incident like this from occurring again. Measures include an extra layer of human review to ensure accuracy during the intake and discharge process. Accordingly, MDC is conducting a thorough internal investigation into what exactly transpired during the discharge process that allowed this incident to occur. Additionally, MDC’s Security Threat Investigation Unit (STIU), is investigating if any circumstances outside the discharge process are present. More info: https://lnkd.in/gPMmVydS

Bernalillo County Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites the public to a special dedication ceremony at the Kiki Saavedra Community Center on Tuesday, July 30, to honor the late Henry "Kiki" Saavedra and commemorate the renaming of the center in his memory. Saavedra represented a South Valley district for 38 years in the New Mexico State Legislature and served as the chair of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. During his tenure, he helped obtain funding for the (formerly known) Mountain View Community Center as well as many other recreational facilities in the area. He passed away in 2019. Please join us as we celebrate his legacy! ❤️

Attention BernCo residents! Are you unsure of what to do with your used tires? 🛞 We have solutions! Come to one of our free "Tire Amnesty Day" events to properly dispose of your tires and help the environment. Improperly stored or dumped tires attract disease-carrying rodents and mosquitoes, posing serious health and safety concerns! ☢️ And mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance... In New Mexico, they can transmit diseases, including the West Nile virus, which can lead to a fatal neurological disorder. The shape of tires traps rainwater and prevents it from evaporating. Mosquitos love this environment! They have shelter from the elements and predators, water, and collected leaf debris for food in the tires. Tires also trap heat, which speeds up egg hatching and larval growth. Removing tires from your property and disposing of them at a Tire Amnesty Day event helps prevent the creation of the mosquito breeding conditions described above. The City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County provide a joint mosquito control program. To report high mosquito population areas and standing water in your neighborhood, please call 311 or (505) 314-0350. Let's work together to keep our community safe! 🌿🦟💧 #BernCo #CommunitySafety #TireDisposal #MosquitoControl
