We are thrilled to share that our 5th STEM Innovation Camp at UC Berkeley College of Engineering was a phenomenal success beyond our dreams, with 100% of our students saying that they had a fantastic experience successfully learning Coding, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and so many excited to join our Kids Teach Tech Teaching Team to learn more and help their communities! Thank you Berkeley Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (especially Alper Atamturk and Goldie Negelev) for your incredible partnership with Kids Teach Tech, including hosting us at the Engineering Leadership Institute, supporting us in this camp, and providing Hannah Nguyen, Alex Forman, and Jordan Argel as Summer Camp Coaches. We were fortunate to have speakers Marie Pelagie Elimbi Moudio, PhD, Caleb Xavier Bugg, and panelists Marcia Breslin-Cantillana, Santiago Karam, Shreejal Luitel, Hannah Nguyen, and Vic May in conversation with Alper and Arjun. Thank you to our Chairman of the Board, Kenneth E. Maxey II, for your incredible support and to the Urban League of Greater San Francisco Bay Area team for hosting our first Family Orientation the week before camp, and all your help before and through the camp. The Kids Teach Tech team collectively contributed thousands of hours to make this program possible including coding, designing, training, and teaching. On May 28, 2024, Berkeley IEOR hosted our annual Advisory Board Meeting on campus, bringing together #leaders from various fields to provide guidance and insight into the department’s future direction. The day began with a welcome from Dean Tsu-Jae King Liu, who shared updates on UC Berkeley College of Engineering’s strategic initiatives and goals. This was followed by a comprehensive state of the department session from Chair Alper Atamturk. The agenda also included presentations on graduate enrollment trends, a presentation by Marie Pelagie Elimbi Moudio, PhD IEOR ’23, and an inspiring journey shared by Jelo Francisco, BS IEOR ’24. Check out the latest episode of the s.t. podcast featuring Prof. Candi Yano from the University of California, Berkeley! During our conversation, Candi provided an overview of her Japanese family background, including the story of her grandfather, who was tragically killed in the Hiroshima bombing during WWII. She also walked us through her very successful academic trajectory, from being a top student in a large public school to obtaining her PhD from Stanford University. In addition, she discussed her main research contributions and reflected on her experience supervising more than 20 PhD students. Moreover, she shared the story behind the creation of notable initiatives such as the WORMS forum and the Manufacturing & Service Operations Management Society, as well as its associated journal. Candi is a truly inspiring person and a remarkable scholar! Candace ("Candi") Yano is a Distinguished Professor with a joint appointment between the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR) and the Operations and Information Technology Management group at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. She currently holds the Gary and Sherron Kalbach Chair in Business Administration and the Morris Chang Distinguished Professorship in the Management of Technology Innovation at UC Berkeley. She has served as department chair in the IEOR Department and as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Haas. In addition to her faculty positions, she currently serves as the Faculty Director for the concurrent MBA-Master of Engineering program. She holds an A.B. in Economics, a M.S. in Operations Research, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University. Candi's primary research interests are production, inventory and logistics management, particularly on how to deal with various sources of uncertainty in these contexts, as well as interdisciplinary problems involving operations and marketing. She has authored or co-authored over 80 articles and book chapters on these subjects and is the recipient of a variety of National Science Foundation and industry grants. She has served as the Editor-in-Chief of IIE Transactions and Department Editor for Management Science, as well as in various editorial capacities for Operations Research, Interfaces, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Service Science and Naval Research Logistics. Candi is a co-founder of the Women in Operations Research and Management Science (WORMS) Forum within INFORMS and was awarded this organization’s Award for the Advancement of Women in 2008. She has also received the Kimball Medal, the highest award for service given by INFORMS, in 2018 and the INFORMS President’s Award in 2022. Professor Yano is a Fellow of both INFORMS and the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers. In April, Berkeley IEOR hosted a day-long conference on AI and optimization, featuring panels on sequential decision-making, ethical AI, transportation electrification, and future AI trends. The event also included working groups, student poster sessions, and ample networking opportunities. Established in 2021 with a $20 million NSF grant, AI4OPT - AI Institute for Advances in Optimization brings together leading institutions like UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, USC, UCSD, UT Arlington, and Clark Atlanta University.
