The partial failure of the west abutment and near failure of the Rapidan Dam in Minnesota last week caught the attention of both the media and the dam safety community. The situation sparked many conversations surrounding climate change, extreme storms, aging infrastructure, and the cost of rehabilitation. To help ensure reliable and effective reporting, ASDSO quickly gathered a pool of media-trained experts to discuss these complex topics with journalists. Thank you to Sharon Tapia, P.E., PMP, Lori Spragens, Bill McCormick, John Roche, P.E., Everett Taylor, and Mia Kannik for serving in our pool of experts. Each was an outstanding representative of ASDSO and the dam safety community. So far, ASDSO has been directly quoted in eight stories, including Lori Spragens in Marketplace Morning Report and Sharon Tapia and Bill McCormick in NBC News. More articles are expected in the coming days. #DamSafety MarketPlace Morning Report: https://lnkd.in/eKD9ZRkk NBC News: https://lnkd.in/egD-Du6x Washington Post: https://lnkd.in/em4R_Pzh New Scientist: https://lnkd.in/eGPM2GbA Associated Press: https://lnkd.in/ex7Um3FB

The US Association of State Dam Safety Officials Board of Directors took some time out of their summer meeting to visit the Teton Dam failure site. Being that this was my first visit, I was surprised by how much of the dam and spillway, etc. remain intact today. It really helps to visit sites like this to get a feel for the magnitude of the failure and devastation that is caused. #DamSafety

Don't miss our upcoming webinar Construction Quality Control / Information Data Systems for Dam Rehabilitation, Tuesday, June 11 from 12 - 2 PM ET. This webinar will look at the use of digital tools in managing the enormous amount of data generated by a project. As a result, construction quality and compliance with design intent can be ascertained in real time and inform decisions that must be made in a timely manner to minimize delays and project impacts. Tools for automated record keeping and as-built drawings will be explained along with data management both during the project and at construction’s end. Today is #DamSafetyDay. Every day, dams benefit communities by providing #flood protection, water supply reservoirs, safe and reliable power, recreation, and much more. But because dams also carry with them risks including those associated with low head dams and catastrophic dam failures, dam safety is a shared responsibility. To help you know your risk, know your role, know the benefits of dams, and take action, check out these great dam safety resources 👇 💧 Living with Dams: Know Your Risks by the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO): https://lnkd.in/eaKMkMv 💧 Living with Dams: Extreme Rainfall Events by ASDSO: https://lnkd.in/eCmHnup 💧 The Most Dangerous Dams video by Practical Engineering: https://lnkd.in/e4-5HyV 💧 Drowning Machine Brochure by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources: https://lnkd.in/g5J7ByDG And a couple just for kids: 💧 Dam Safety with Beaverly by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA): https://lnkd.in/eRUpAWhg 💧 Dams 101 for Kids by ASDSO: https://damsafety.org/kids WEST personnel are nationally recognized for dam and levee breach modeling, and provide instruction on dam breach modeling using HEC-RAS for the The American Society of Civil Engineers. Dams provide a life-sustaining resource; however, the lack of funding for dam upgrades is a serious national problem. ASDSO estimates the total cost to rehabilitate the nation’s non-federal dams at $157.5 billion. Learn more about the importance of #DamSafetyDay at DamSafety.org/NDSAD.

Today is National Dam Safety Awareness Day! Our team members regularly evaluate our dams and make recommendations for improvement. Our goal is that our dams are safe, reliable, and are able to provide their intended service to the New England communities. The New England District dams, hurricane protection barriers, and local protection projects prevented $365 million in flood damages. Today we join the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) in celebrating and recognizing National Dam Safety Awareness Day. As a responsible dam owner, The York Water Company is acutely aware of our responsibility to protect our community while at the same time providing water storage and recreation opportunities at our reservoirs. Our newly rehabilitated Lake Williams Dam is designed and constructed to withstand more than 107,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) of flow, an increase in capacity of 69,000 cfs from its original 1912 design. Based upon improved modelling and innovative design and construction techniques, the modified spillway is designed to offer a higher level of protection for everything downstream today and for generations to come.

Today is National Dam Safety Awareness Day, commemorating the 1889 South Fork Dam failure and raising awareness about the importance of dam safety. On this day, we remember the 2,220 lives lost in Johnstown, PA when the South Fork Dam collapsed. This tragedy reminds us that dam safety is a shared responsibility - from the public to the private sector, we must all work together to ensure that dams remain safe. As disasters, cyberattacks, and other hazards become more frequent and severe, it’s vital that dams and other critical infrastructure are built 🏗️ and maintained 🛠️ with safety and resilience in mind. ℹ️ Learn more: FEMA: https://lnkd.in/gVTFS3xU Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO): https://lnkd.in/gwTftey USDA: https://lnkd.in/gzjsnMni #DamSafety #NDSAD #damsafetyawareness #BeDamAware #criticalinfrastructure #damresilience #infrastructureresilience #infrastructureresilience #FEMA #USDA
