Bio:
Caitlin Scarborough is a certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse from Minnesota. She began her nursing career in the Army working in med/surg and plastics in Landstuhl, Germany. She was then stationed in San Antonio, TX where she was a burn nurse at Brooke Army Medical Center. These assignments fostered her love of all things wound care so she became certified and entered civilian life. She worked for 8 years at a specialty and transplant hospital in San Antonio before making the move home to Minnesota. Her experiences on many different units around the world give her a unique perspective on patient care.

Abstract:
Current published consensus guidelines from IWII, WRR, and NPIAP tell us that debridement is vital to the healing processes because “microbial colonies begin to reform 24 hours after debridement” and the presence of “slough or necrotic tissue can promote bacterial growth…[and] prevent the formation of granulation tissue…” and furthermore, it is proven that “more frequent debridement was associated with improved healing.” However, current debridement options such as: sharp, autolytic, mechanical, or ointment-based debridement options have their limits.
