ASIS International - Northern NJ Chapter XIII 4th Annual Michael F. Golf Outing was a rousing success despite the downpour of heavy rain after 6 holes. Within 30 minutes of the downpour the sun burst out clearing the clouds. Even though some golfers were still wet; play resumed, and the players finished the outing as intended. ASIS NNJ E-Board Thomas Whittles , Brian Higgins, CPP, CSSP , Brian M. is extending its thanks and appreciation to all our golfers, sponsors and Skyway Golf for their support.

ASIS International - Northern NJ Chapter XIII recent Chapter Meeting at the American Dream Mall inside Carpaccio Restaurant was a successful event evident by its above average attendance and a timely, informative presentation by Retired FBI Supervisory Agent Christopher Donohue who discussed “Threats Against the Houses of Worship.” Mr. Donohue, in his presentation, emphasized the need for religious communities to maintain an open dialogue with law enforcement, conduct a risk assessment to identify its threat and risk, practice situational awareness, monitor access points of entry with staff and volunteers and report unusual and/or suspicious behavior. I also learned through attendee remarks there are religious communities more aggressive than others with their security initiatives posting armed security in and outside points of access, installing close-circuit camera surveillance, equipping and training staff with bleeding control kits and developing emergency plans for an active shooter event. As aggressive and mindful as religious communities can be of their threats and risk there are communities who are mindless; preferring a public image their religious community is safe without the need for security protection. The provision of security protection for religious organizations is not a “one size fits all” approach: its sometime dependent on funding or lack thereof, current threat(s) or lack thereof to the religious community, leadership and congregant perception of risk and threat. Mindfulness of risk and threats is an element of situational awareness; mindlessness is not. In closing, the ASIS Executive Board wants to thank Christopher D. for his presentation, attending Security Professionals, Carpaccio Restaurant Inc for their sumptuous meal and dessert and American Dream Mall Security Director Anthony Scamardella for his hospitality.
