We are excited to announce that our first book in 20 years, "Architecture. Research. Office." is available for pre-order and will be published this September! The definitive book on ARO compiles over 30 of the firm’s most significant projects alongside seven principles that guide the practice. Writer and curator Brooke Hodge’s introduction describes ARO’s philosophy, while a concluding conversation with partners Stephen, Kim, and Adam offers their perspective on leading a firm that always keeps learning. Part handbook, part monograph, "Architecture. Research. Office." directly frames the work, the process, the people—and how the three produce contextual, impactful design. We promote Passive House building standards because we know how important it is to build for the future—that includes our current and future students. When we design for climate-minded solutions, we give our schools an opportunity to mirror these values in their curriculums, and our students a chance to create more sustainable, equitable communities. Hear more from Ann-Marie Fallon from Architype along with Barry McCarron, Head of Business and Development at South West College, Naomi C.O. Beal from phME-passivhausMAINE, Richard Lo from Kaplan Thompson Architects, Timothy Lock from OPAL Architecture, Dominic Griffin from the Architecture Research Office, and Wolfgang Hasper from the Passive House Institute. This morning marked a monumental step for the Rothko Chapel as we celebrated the groundbreaking of Opening Spaces Phase II. This transformative project is set to further enhance one of Houston's most cherished sanctuaries of art, spirituality, and community engagement. Thanks to all that participated including Troy Porter, our esteemed Board Chairman, for his leadership. Architects Stephen Cassell and Adam Yarinsky of Architecture Research Office along with Thomas Woltz of Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, shared their innovative plans that promise to honor and elevate the Chapel's legacy. We also appreciate the contributions of board member Lee Lahourcade, and supporters Judy Nyquist, and Cultural Ambassador Lynn Wyatt for their unwavering support and dedication to the arts and culture in Houston. Thank you, Aliyah Efotte from the Office of Council Member Abbie Kamin, City of Houston, District C, for her participation and support in this milestone event. Phase II is divided into two subphases. Phase 2a includes the construction of a new Administration and Archives Building and the Kathleen and Chuck Mullenweg Meditation Garden. Phase 2b will include a new Program Center, a guest bungalow to provide dedicated housing for Chapel speakers and fellows, and a tree-shaded plaza, all located on the Chapel’s North Campus. When completed in 2026, this expanded North Campus – connected to the Chapel across Sul Ross Street – will dramatically transform the depth and breadth of the Chapel’s public programming. Together, the new facilities and redesigned grounds will be more accessible to the public, elevate the visitor experience, and further the founders vision of the Chapel as a sanctuary open to all for both contemplation and action. Grounded in both the singular power of the Chapel building and the unique character of the surrounding early 20th-century residential neighborhood, the new campus architecture and landscape will maintain the de Menils’ vision of situating the sacred within daily life. The groundbreaking not only represents a physical foundation but also reaffirms our commitment to providing a space for contemplation and cultural dialogue. Thank you to everyone involved for their dedication and enthusiasm as we look forward to the new possibilities that lie ahead for the Rothko Chapel.

Excited for this important project to welcome its newest students this Fall as well! See some great in-progress views of ARO's Passive House NYC Public School coming together in Downtown Brooklyn below:
I had the pleasure to recently tour a New York City public primary school and Khalil Gibran International Academy, an Arabic language public high school, under construction in downtown #Brooklyn, that are going for Passive House Certification, with architect Dominic Griffin of Architecture Research Office and owner’s rep Ben Ment of Effectus Group. The two schools total 146,000 SF and the program is complex and extensive including separate lobbies, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and outdoor roof spaces. The ground floor is shared with commercial uses and forms the base of a highrise all-electric apartment building. The daylight is ample inside with noisy Flatbush Avenue unnoticeable as we walked the classrooms and corridors. The high school includes laboratories with special vent hoods and ventilation. An interstitial mechanical floor allows ventilation and other mechanical units to be more centralized. We can see on the outdoor roof spaces the space for a thick insulation layer. It was great to take it all in. This important project was featured at our Denver conference in October and we are happy to make a video of that presentation available here. https://lnkd.in/ebcQ33qM I look forward to the students and teachers moving in! #passivehouse #schools #health #comfort #learning
