Today was such a special day! After attending weekly policy and advocacy meetings with the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) throughout my pregnancy, my little one was finally able to meet and put faces to the voices she consistently heard advocating for change. And to top it off, it was while bearing witness to the historic moment in which CA state senate voted to PASS ACA 8! It will now be on the ballot in November 2024! For the first time in CA, the power to end slavery (no conditions/exceptions) is in the hands of the voters! The California constitution currently prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude EXCEPT as a punishment for a crime. ACA 8 would change this to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude IN ANY FORM! People often ask what they can do to help create change. The answer is VOTE! Legislation and advocacy are key components to activism and our growth as a society. 🚨 Yesterday, #ACA8 passed the CA legislature! 🙌 We have created a new ballot measure for November 2024, allowing CA voters to help us #EndSlaveryinCA. Read Sam Lewis's statement in Politico recapping this historic victory! “For too long, slavery has been embedded in California’s constitution, forcing incarcerated people to work against their will and face punishment if they refuse,” Sam Lewis, executive director of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, said in a statement. “Now, the California legislature has paved the way for ACA 8 to be placed on the ballot, allowing California voters to help end this cruel and racist practice.” https://lnkd.in/gzwpauH3

Such an amazing experience being at the most prestigious conference for HR professionals in the world and representing ARC! We couldn’t be more grateful especially being at a record breaking event of over 26,000 HR professionals yet only a few thousand of them being people of color and an even smaller fraction of that representing re-entry work!

The National Life Without Parole (LWOP) Leadership Council has just launched BeyondLWOP.org. This new website showcases inspiring stories of people who were released after life without parole sentences and how they’ve turned their lives around and given back to their communities. BeyondLWOP.org offers information on the kinds of harm life sentences without parole cause to communities, shows where each state stands on its use of the sentence and outlines effective alternatives. We're thrilled to partner with Human Rights Watch and the USC Post Conviction Justice Project on this website. #EndLWOP #SecondChancesStrongerCommunities

Over the weekend, our Sacramento staff and members got together to celebrate Juneteenth! We had a wonderful time learning a bit about how this historic day came about thanks to our own, Danzell Nunsuch. We shared some good bbq and laughter then attended the Juneteenth festival at William Land Park. Shout out to Tyson Nguyen, Richard London, Wajuba McDuffy, Frank Abella and Candice Lewis for putting together this awesome event!
