I recently had the privilege of attending the AIST Sweden Decarbonization Study Tour hosted by the Environmental Technology Committee, and what an experience it was. 5 days, 9 facilities, 16 of the steel industry’s finest(myself not included), and one goal, understand how Sweden’s steel manufacturers, and industries in general, are making their aggressive carbon-neutral goals a reality. I can’t express how fortunate I feel to work for a company that allows one the opportunity to participate in such events and recognizes the importance of exposing its employees to the forefront of the steel industry’s carbon-neutral transition. It’s no secret that the industry has a long way to go to attain its carbon-neutral goal, but Sweden’s clean power, abundant natural resources, and nationwide push into clean fuels places them on the path to help realize that goal. Thank you to all those involved in making this trip possible and for making it the intense learning experience that it was. Undoubtedly, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Kate Kuuskman was raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada with little interest in pursuing a career in the steel industry. But after learning about the various processes and professions that support them, she joined the ranks as third-generation steelworker at Algoma Steel Inc. in 2006. Years later, Kuuskman became the first female general manager in operations at Algoma. She currently serves as the general manager — direct strip production complex and cold mill.
