About us
Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) is a community-focused, non-profit affordable housing developer. Since 1975, AHC Inc. has developed more than 50 apartment communities with more than 8,200 affordable apartments in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC. AHC also provides extensive educational programs and social services onsite at our apartment communities to enhance residents’ lives – and the communities we serve. AHC prioritizes community-building, equity, and diversity throughout our organization - from thoughtful engagement with the residents we serve to long-time relationships with local government and community partners. Our outstanding real estate track record includes innovative development strategies, award-winning architectural design, cutting-edge environmental solutions, and long-time partnerships and quality developments that strengthen neighborhoods and local economies. AHC’s nationally recognized Resident Services program initiated nearly 30 years ago, is helping build stronger futures for more than 3,000 children, youth, and adults who live in our affordable housing communities through education programs, social services, community partnerships, and access to local support. Our team has earned the industry-leader CORES certification, which recognizes AHC’s ongoing commitment to the highest standards for resident services. Volunteer opportunities include working with elementary students in our Afterschool or Summer Program and teens in our Tutoring and College and Career Readiness Programs. We are proud that 100% of the students in our education programs have graduated from high school, with the majority going to college - most the first in their families to achieve this life-changing milestone. Check out our newest #CommunitySpotlight! We want you to meet Alethea, the Resident Engagement Specialist at Barclay Greenmount, an AHC community in Baltimore. Alethea works onsite with our residents to build community and create lasting relationships. You’ll also meet Nancy, one of the participants in our Women’s Empowerment program. The program meets twice a month to learn from a variety of speakers and discover ways to grow and transform their lives. Partner The Greenmount West Community Center Foundation and the mural by LaTosha Maddox, a Baltimore-based artist, made it in the video! Tune in next month for another #CommunitySpotlight.

This week marks the first of AHC Summer Camp, and activities are in full swing! The Arlington Rotary Club assembled 120 drawstring pool bags for our campers. The bags each have a pair of goggles to help the kids beat the heat this summer. Thank you Arlington Rotary Club!

At AHC, we work to build genuine connections through intentional work. We want to ensure our residents can not only access housing that is affordable to them, but also thrive in their communities. At The Spire, an AHC community in Alexandria, we partnered with the Office of Housing of the City of Alexandria, Virginia and Legal Services of Northern Virginia to bring a Tenant Rights & Responsibilities workshop to our residents. Residents from multiple AHC communities in Alexandria attended and learned about legal protections for maintenance and repairs, liability of rent payments for couples/roommates, tenant responsibility over guests' behaviors, and more. The City also provided translation services in Spanish and Amharic. Thanks to our partners for helping us bring this important information to our residents!

Exciting news! Baltimore City’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund awarded $1 million to support the next phase of Key’s Pointe, AHC’s joint venture with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City and The Michaels Organization to redevelop O’Donnell Heights, a 62-acre, 1940s public housing community on Baltimore’s southeast side. This will add 60 new homes to the 144 already completed townhome-style apartments at this community.

Last week, AHC participated in the US Africa Collaborative’s 2024 Pan African City Exposition at Bowie State University. This year’s theme was “Building Equity and Sustainability for the Future.” AHC led a session with Mo Smith, an affordable housing attorney with Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, on Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). During the session, Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, provided an overview of AHC’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan and shared how affordable housing is a platform for economic mobility where residents can grow and transform their lives. Cindy Rozón, Senior Director of Resident Services at AHC, discussed the holistic nature of AHC’s resident services programming in the four cornerstones of housing stability. Alan Goldstein, Vice President of Real Estate Development at AHC, focused on AHC’s new construction communities financed with LIHTC and the development process. Thanks for having us, Bowie State and US Africa Collaborative!
