Today, 41 percent of U.S. aquifers contain a detectable level of pesticides, and pesticide pollution is associated with hundreds of millions of acute illnesses annually. On top of that, pesticides are expensive: growers spend roughly $60B on pesticides annually, and these chemicals can account for up to 30 percent of some crops’ production costs. AgZen is enabling farmers to cut pesticide usage by 30-50% with its technology, which uses AI to provide insights into how to reduce the amount of chemicals that farmers need to spray to achieve their target outcomes. The startup, which is building its product in our Somerville prototyping lab, conducted 12 major pilots in 2023 and is turning its sights to a Series A raise, leasing its technology commercially on thousands of acres, and running a project with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Worldwide, farms spend approximately $60 billion a year on pesticides. AgZen’s objective is to reduce the amount of pesticides sprayed and lighten the financial burden on farms, without sacrificing effective pest management. In pilots last year, our feedback-optimized spraying system demonstrated its ability to halve the pesticide needs of farms while improving crop yields. This means not only a significant reduction in the environmental impact of pesticides but also a positive impact on farmers’ bottom line.
