Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago builds power through collective advocacy and organizing to achieve racial equity. We do this through: LEADERSHIP Developing grassroots leaders through base-building programs such as KINETIC (for high school English learners), I Speak Power (for adult English learners), and A Just Chi (at-large community members) ADVOCACY Connecting communities through coalition leadership including Just Democracy Illinois, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and the Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment Coalition CIVIC ENGAGEMENT Getting out the vote by reaching out to Asian Americans, increasing participation, and growing our community’s power. We win campaigns by exercising our power and mobilizing community members to achieve racial equity. -- Advancing Justice | Chicago is an affiliate of Asian Americans Advancing Justice. Our national affiliation allows us to raise a more powerful voice to better serve our communities and become more effective in addressing the civil rights issues faced by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and other vulnerable and underserved communities. Lee Ann Eiland and Sangini Brahmbhatt Named Co-Chairs of Breakin' ItDown Planning Committee Breakin’ It Down has announced the appointments of Lee Ann Eiland and Sangini Brahmbhatt to serve as the next co-chairs of its Planning Committee. They were elected and took on their new leadership roles in April 2024. Breakin’ It Down, a fiscal-sponsored project of Mujeres Latinas en Accion, provides a pivotal platform for driving transformative change in the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising. For 20 years, the BID annual conference - through equitable access to relevant programming, experts, and resources - has engaged thousands of diverse professionals and community leaders in the field to discourse about the state of the field of nonprofit, philanthropy, and fundraising, and its impact on under-recognized and marginalized Chicago communities and the career quality of diverse professionals who serve them. The co-chair appointments signal a strategic focus on enhancing capacities and spearheading BID’s role as a catalyst to contribute to economic empowerment and inclusive mobility for communities and professionals, by advancing racial equity in the field and shared actions at scale. The Planning Committee also welcomes incoming members, who were appointed in May 2024: Carlil Pittman, founder and executive director of Goodkids Madcity, Amira Turner, consultant, and Athena Williams, executive director of Oak Park Regional Housing Center. Teachers like Dr. Rachael Mahmood are setting a great example of what it looks like to teach Asian American history throughout the year. After the passage of the TEAACH Act, Dr. Mahmood helped design our professional development workshop on how to teach Asian American and Pacific Islander history, which has now reached more than 2,200 educators across Illinois. https://lnkd.in/gWAH6ban This week, the Chicago Tribune highlighted the Language Equity and Access Act as one of the bills currently awaiting Governor Pritzker's signature. Advancing Justice | Chicago is proud to have led the advocacy effort to pass this bill over the last two years. "The Language Equity and Access Act would create a language access policy to be carried out by the governor’s Office of New Americans and other agencies such as the Illinois Department of Human Services. The legislation was inspired, in part, by the difficulties many Asian-Americans have experienced while trying to access state services such as applying for unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic, said Grace Pai, executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago. Pai said that government agencies receiving federal funding are required to help limited English speakers with translation in various languages, but that requirement 'is not strongly enforced' and not all state agencies are federally funded. So the legislation is a way of making sure there’s a standard requirement for all state agencies to provide translation or interpretation for the public, if necessary, Pai said."
