About us
We empower scientists to reinvent the world by bringing their research to market. Founded in 2015, Activate empowers scientists to reinvent the world by launching startups to address climate change and other global challenges. Working between government, philanthropy, universities, and the private sector, Activate transforms scientists into high-impact entrepreneurs through the Activate Fellowship, a two-year immersive experience that equips science entrepreneurs with the skills, networks, infrastructure, and funding they need to quickly and effectively bring their groundbreaking research to market. Activate is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and does not charge any fee nor equity for fellows to participate. Activate’s entrepreneurial fellowship model originated at Cyclotron Road, the first U.S. Department of Energy's Lab Embedded Entrepreneurship Program (LEEP) started at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the founding Activate partner. Activate supports fellows in communities across the U.S.: Activate Berkeley, Activate Boston, Activate New York, Activate Houston, and Activate Anywhere. Learn more at Activate.org.

Ever wondered what happens to cooling systems in data centers during extreme seismic events? MetaSeismic (Noemi Bonessio, PhD, PE, Cohort 2020) uses AI to develop sustainable metamaterials that filter out harmful vibrations. Their latest test involved a 250-gallon Submer pod with Hypertec servers, subjected to seismic vibrations reaching 1.8 g-forces in three directions, according to NEBS GR-63 standards. Curious about the results? Watch the video to see what happened! https://lnkd.in/g_cdRk2Q

On this day in history, July 10, 1856, the inventor Nikola Tesla was born. He once said, "If you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of Energy, Frequency, and Vibration." Inspired by these principles, MetaSeismic is pioneering the creation of acoustic metamaterials and innovative solutions that harness the power of Energy, Frequency, and Vibration to protect people, goods, and our precious Earth. On July 10, 2024, MetaSeismic is pleased to share a significant milestone: the achievement of Seismic Certification for Immersion-Cooled Data Centers and collaborations with the leading experts Submer, Hypertec Group, and Wyoming Hyperscale. This is just the beginning of a new era for vibration-absorbing, sustainable, and high-performance materials. Watch the video to discover more! We had a great time at the WORLD MATERIALS FORUM 2024 in Paris! We’re honored to have been nominated as one of 12 innovative companies chosen for the Start-Up Challenge, including our friends at Osmoses, Brimstone , Aepnus Technology, Sunchem, and Tyfast (s/o Activate). Congrats to Bilen Akuzum, Ph.D. and Lukas Hackl at Aepnus Technology and Hugo Leandri at Brimstone on their wins! Overall, it was a day of excellent conversation with CEOs and thought leaders at top materials companies. The message is clear: the renewable energy transition, coupled with rising geopolitical tensions, is putting a major strain on materials supply chains. We need to diversify our use of the periodic table and secure domestic supply of critical materials like aluminum - exactly where we are innovating at Found Energy with our aluminum power systems. Thank you again to the WORLD MATERIALS FORUM and Victoire de Margerie for putting on this inspiring event!

Congrats to Tatta Bio (Cohort 2024, Yunha Hwang) on launching their first open-source project- DGEB, the first large-scale functional evaluation benchmark for biological language models. Check out this exciting work!
Today we're open-sourcing DGEB, the first large-scale functional evaluation benchmark for biological language models 🧬 DGEB fills a key gap in BioML by providing diverse functional benchmarks for assessing pLM and gLM representations. We address two critical problems in existing functional evals: 1) Bias in evaluation datasets and 2) Lack of evaluations that assess functional relationships *between* genomic elements. Biology is incredibly diverse, yet biological research is biased towards a few model organisms. Foundation models of biology must learn from data across the tree of life. Existing evaluations using only model organisms perpetuate this bias, hindering diverse discovery and design.DGEB features 18 expert-curated datasets that span all three domains of life! 🌱🦠🐛 For underrepresented taxa (e.g. #Archaea), we find that model performance is poor and do not improve with scaling, highlighting a key limitation of existing models. Inferring biological function requires understanding the evolutionary and functional relationships *between* biomolecules. DGEB features multi-sequence tasks, allowing us to ask questions such as how well do learned embedding distances recapitulate phylogenetic distances? Can we use pLMs to retrieve bacterial homologs given archaeal proteins? Do pLMs learn co-regulatory interactions or distinguish paralogs from orthologs? Can multi-element functions (e.g. biosynthetic gene clusters) be captured in representations? DGEB is inspired by NLP benchmarks, in particular MTEB from Hugging Face. Our field can only progress with transparent, collaborative and diversified evaluation datasets. We encourage the contribution of expert-curated datasets through our github repo: https://lnkd.in/gHJ_WWsT This was a true multi-disciplinary effort by our team at Tata Bio: Jacob West-Roberts Joshua Kravitz Nishant J. and Andre Cornman. This work is made possible with generous support by Schmidt Futures! Read our manuscript at: https://www.tatta.bio/dgeb

Big shoutout to Activate New York's managing director Andrew Chang for speaking at the ARPA-E IGNIITE Awards ceremony this week in Washington D.C. He addressed the 23 awardees about the Activate Fellowship and the critical need for innovation in the energy space. Chang shared the stage with other incredible speakers including ARPA-E Director Evelyn Wang and Congressman Bill Foster (D-11-IL), as well as representatives from Breakthrough Energy and the National Academy of Sciences. It was an exciting event, as each IGNIITE 2024 awardee will receive approximately $500,000 to advance research projects across universities, national laboratories, and the private sector, covering the full spectrum of energy applications. #ARPAEIGNIITE We can't wait to see what they accomplish with this support.
