On #WorldRefugeeDay, there are more refugees in the world than ever before. Displacement in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine drive millions to hunger. In mid-2023, 110 million people worldwide were displaced, and 43.3 million of them --- or 40% --- were children under 18. By now, that number has risen even higher. Action Against Hunger works closely with refugees to help them rebuild their lives. Many of our staff members are refugees themselves. Every day, we work to prevent and treat malnutrition, provide mental health services, improve access to water and sanitation, and support displaced people, wherever they end up. As conflict in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine rages on, our teams face the displacement crisis head-on. Action Against Hunger HEARO https://bit.ly/3xgpLpD

More than 50% of Gaza’s cropland has been damaged by conflict. With the entire population on the brink of famine, Action Against Hunger is scaling up its support of local farmers. The initiative aims to address the region’s critical hunger crisis. “Gaza’s agricultural sector has faced immense disruptions in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukrainian crisis, protracted conflicts in the Gaza Strip and climate change,” explained a food security expert from Action Against Hunger in Gaza. “However, since Oct. 7, the situation has deteriorated and the level of hunger is unprecedented in Gaza’s modern history.”

One in 11 people worldwide go to bed hungry every night, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (#SOFI) report, which was released today. That means that 733 million people are #foodinsecure. Chronic inequality, conflict, and climate shocks are driving the hunger around the world. Funding is essential to mitigate this crisis. “The good news is that the international community has the tools and the knowledge to prevent hunger for everyone, for good,” said Dr. Charles E. Owubah, CEO of Action Against Hunger. “Yet, unless we close the growing gap between community needs and available funding, this preventable crisis will continue.”

In the last five years, migration throughout Central America has soared. Families flee violence from drug cartels and gangs, worsening economic inequalities, gender-based violence, government instability, and natural disasters. They travel north in the hope of finding safety for their children and starting a new life elsewhere. https://bit.ly/3Y7GbM4

In the 2023 Gender Parity report by the World Economic Forum, the gender gap currently stands at 68.4% and it is estimated that it will take 169 years for the Economic and Opportunity access gender gap to be closed. For us to fast track our progress towards achieving the Sustainable development goals, it js imperative that women are empowered to make their own contribution and be the champions of the change they seek to achieve. Last week, Action Against Hunger | ACF-USA in partnership with The Institute for Social Transformation launched the African Union Empowering Women in Agriculture (EWA) program Uganda chapter. The EWA program is aimed at addressing the multitude of challenges faced by women in the agricultural sector. Its main objectives are land reforms, leadership, access to inputs and mechanization plus advocacy/policy support. EWA is currently being implemented in 10 countries including Liberia, Tanzania, Malawi, Nigeria. The program is currently led by H.E Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria; H.E Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, former president of Liberia; HE Joyce Banda, former president of Malawi; H.E Mme. Bineta Diop African Union Special Envoy of Peace and Security who officiated the launch of the EWA Uganda chapter. Key to note, EWA will be running a campaign of retiring the hoe to the museum.
