What do you do if your team members lack leadership skills in brand development?

1. Firstly draft and align the brand vision for 3-5 years. 2. The assessment of the team should be done with respect to it, in terms of competencies required to realise the same. 3. Identify what competencies are required in your team and which part of the competencies can be brought in through an agency. 4. After step 3, revisit the complete list of competencies required for vision articulated in step 1. 5. This should be followed up with an assessment of the strengths and gaps within the existing team. 6. Depending on the time urgency of the skill gaps observed, either hiring decisions or training decisions should be made. This is a key task of a marketing leader. Also bear in mind to consistently develop talent pipeline.

In my opinion the worst thing leaders do is compare every team member basis their benchmarks. If you just a fish by its ability to climb a tree the failure is yours and not the team members. It is hence key to identify the right skill for each team member and nurture that instead of expecting everyone to excel at the same skill. Identification of skill sets and fitment is the biggest challenge and the most important quality in a team lead. Seeing the team members as individuals helps unlock their potential.

Not everyone is born to lead, however, they can all contribute in a powerful manner when they are allowed to express themselves in the manner that is most comfortable to them. It is best to understand what motivates an employee and focus on their strengh in relating that to your brand. If you can find their passion and make that a part of their strategy or representation of the company, the brand will benefit from the natural delivery of what your employee has to offer and they will become a great leader in representing your brand.

In my experience, leadership skills can be presented to someone but don't become meaningful until put into practice, so giving them visibility & exposure to current practices at the company would be helpful. I'd work to find the person(s) education & opportunities relating to company branding. This would include but wouldn't be limited to having them meet with current leaders at the company responsible for driving brand awareness outside the company's walls to provide them with insights & best practices. It also provides an opportunity for both parties to ask questions that could identify areas of strength or development areas for the team member(s).

In the simplest form, everyone on the team needs to know what the organization stands for and have standards, examples and coaching on how to represent the brand clearly as it pertains to their job function, aspects of brand expression, as well as their relationships inside and outside of the organization. Find ways to enjoy the process because the brand (perception of the organization) and team are always evolving.

when you know that your team does not have top-notch skills in a specific field then you should start with realistic expectations. firstly, tell them why is it much needed. why do we need to focus on this mission? then provide essential training and let them show their skills. keep guiding them in the areas where they lack. soon they'll be hitting the target.

Having worked in Human Resources when I was younger and now developer and creator of a brand. It is imperative that someone unfamilular with the brand is familiarized with the operations that made it a success, to keep the momentium and in addition given clear cut direction and details of what is expected of them. Training is a must! Everyone should participate in the training, including senior managers who are part of the approval hierarchy. If senior managers don't participate, they will not be able to reinforce what marketers learned in training. Consequently, learning will not be applied. Marketers should be students of their field. Read books, listen to podcasts, get your head out of the proverbial cockpit and see what other brands in your company, category, and other categories are doing. Learn and grow!

in my opinion, investing in your team's training always pays off. when you acknowledge the importance of making them skilled, they also acknowledge your efforts. it leads to their better performance and empathy towards you and the entire team. there are multiple ways to make this happen: - allocate a specific budget for training. - provide them with offline training and also suggest some online programs. - give them specific tasks and let them learn new things with hands-on experience.

I think people are trying to force branding into a determinist recipe. It is not. Of course there are practical steps to making a brand, that can be taught in a couple of sessions.. but making a brand that people love is what really matters.. I think that is a lost art, as a society we are pushing conformity, and when we are busy fitting in, we loose artistic instincts that are vital to create market hits, brands that people love at first sight..

I remember having a teammate struggling to create content for a brand but when we did a few brainstorming sessions and related the brand to relatable characters, he had a smooth sailing.
