How do you design learning activities that promote active recall and retrieval?

Use quizzes and flashcards to help learners remember. Also, review often to strengthen memory. Finally, give tasks where they apply what they've learned in real life.

My personal favorite is imparting information in short bouts in the form of how-to-videos, infographics, etc. I believe that the learner should have the choice to select the modality in which they want to consume knowledge at any given point. So, I make it a point to inculcate the information that I want them to actively recall and retrieve in all the learning modalities I am creating. In the design phase, I would concentrate on the various ways information will be presented to the learner and the pathways in which this information will be reaching them. And it has to be more than one for sure!

In my experience, the key to recall and retrieval is practical application, meaning doing everything hands-on. This can be implemented in two ways depending on the approach, audience, goals, and conditions. The first option is to prepare a guide where participants independently perform the necessary actions, and then you review their work afterward. The second option is to conduct a workshop format meeting where participants immediately apply all the knowledge in practice in real-time

Repetition and reiteration is the key here. If I am the trainer, I would focus on important areas for a bit more time, clearly communicate that this is something that the learners "need" to know for them to do their job better. I would also focus on what's in it for them? If they can relate to why this is important, the chances of active recall and retrieval increases. While developing trainings, I would use color theory to highlight what's important and design the materials in a way that one color highlights the key information in all of the learning materials in the exact same way. As such, the learners will be able to tie each modality together by noticing the colors used. This will also help them in active recall and retrieval.

Strategically communicating as to why learning a particular piece of information is important to the learner is an underrated but effective way to enhance the learning experience. But let me be clear, it is not about sending an email two weeks before the training starts. An overcall comms approach is to be developed where digital and physical methods are used to spread awareness about why XYZ training is happening and why is it important for the learners to take it. If I put myself in the learner's shoe, I would like communications coming my way regarding what should I learn? why should I learn? and where can I find the resources to learn? And that too, not just once but periodically.

I'm going to be honest , I've not familiar with this type of cognitive development training. Reading the article, however I feel as though this is extremely beneficial because being in training and development fire as a trainer you would come up with kids for our trees so they can recall certain policies or procedures they need to know. You always did a lot of associations so they can understand orders of operation in certain procedures in the bank so when doing the assessment would be easier for them to you answer questions this however is much better! To do it without cues and to get the information correct and to know it fast it's worth it to me to impart on any team in the future I may be honored to lead.
