How can you answer situational interview questions with ease?

I recommend preparing for the interview by coming up with a list of your best examples across multiple areas, i.e. challenging situation, failure, influencing, navigating in an unknown, etc. Think through situations using the STAR method to ensure you have a clear, concise story to share. I also recommend you leverage the power of a pivot. When a question is asked and you don't have an exact situation you can say "I have an example that is similar that I would like to share." Researching media interviews and how to pivot can be beneficial to the candidate in preparing for a behavioral interview.

Situational questions are not hypothetical scenarios so it's important to address any question with real experiences that you have directly had. First, speak to the "Problem," then explain the "Action" that you took to address the problem, and finally, share the "Results" of your action. Be prepared with examples that you can share with some fluidity, so it doesn't sound like you're stumbling along and making up your answer as you go. People rarely get hired because of a good idea - They typically get hired because they had a great strategy, so be the solution that you would want to hire. Remember - While it's important to know when to stop talking, keep in mind that lack of conversation represents lack of interest. Giddy'up!

Responses for the situation-based questions should be from real-life scenarios. Do not try to create any hypothetical situation and then build a story around it unless you are asked for a hypothetical scenario. Focus on the Situation, Task, Action, and Result (STAR method) to ensure your answer is clear. Always speak in the first person.

Take a pause, gather your thoughts. Try to relate the situation with the role you are applying for and answer it logically, also try to keep it inline with the organisations policy. Support it with an e.g. if you have already experienced any similar situation. Don't forget to mention your learning or take away from that experience. Keep it simple, keep smiling and be confident!!

The best strategy is to rely on your experience. Any situational question answered with a guess wouldn’t land well. Follow the logic. STAR method is a great way to put a structure to your answer But the response would only be impactful, when you dont rush, take time and provide answers grounded in genuine experience.

Most situations would have been faced by most of us from our experience. Start by giving an overview of the situation or problem and explain what was required to tackle the problem. Next explain what was done and then the how the actions resulted in a positive outcome. This method will help in providing a clear response to the question. Most importantly, stay clam and listen to the questions being asked by the interviewer. This way, the interviewer also assesses your listening skills and your thought process.

If STAR feels formulaic, you can also form your response by answering: WHAT - What is it that I did to achieve the goal? HOW - How did achieve the goal? WHY - Why was it important to the business? ROI - What the resulting ROI to the business?

As far as my experience STAR technique is most simplest way, here are some benefits: 1. The STAR technique provides a clear and concise structure, making it easy for the hiring manager to follow your narrative and understand the context of your past experiences. 2. By systematically going through each component (Situation, Task, Action, Result), you ensure that you cover all essential aspects of your story.

The STAR technique is perfect for questions beginning with "tell me about a time when........" My experience debriefing thousands of candidates tells me the following what types of behavioral based questions to expect: Successes: be able to clearly articulate a success story - you delivered a project on time at budget OR you exceeded quotas OR you rescued a project from disaster 2) challenges: Tell me about a time when you failed to hit an objective 3) working in a team environment and dealing with challenging personalities 4) ethical situations: did you ever witness someone doing something unethical and what did you do? Have examples for each area and use the STAR Technique to deliver the response......and Rehearse (see below)

Certainly, when preparing examples consider the following 1. Start with Why:Clearly articulate the purpose or reason behind your actions. Why did you take a particular approach in a situation? 2. Align with Values:Demonstrate how your actions align with your core values. This ensures consistency in decision-making. 3. Inspire Action:Showcase instances where your actions inspired positive change or motivated others to contribute effectively. 4. Focus on Impact: Emphasize the positive impact of your actions, whether it's improving a process, fostering teamwork or achieving a goal. By incorporating these elements, you present examples that not only highlight your skills but also reflect a commitment to purposeful and values-driven actions

Most candidates focus on summarizing all their tasks and responsibilities to highlight the experiences and hard skills they have. But that does not necessarily tell a company how good you were at something. If you want to be ahead of the competition, focus on the value add your contribution had to the company. For example, did the company save or make more money with your support? Did you increase employee and or customer satisfaction? Did you optimize processes which had an impact on speed? Focus on your achievements, not the tasks.

1. Do Your Research - Check out the company’s Sustainability report and annual report. Check the news for recent articles written on the company or its executives. Check out the leaders on LinkedIn. 2. Practice, Practice, Practice - Get on the company’s Glassdoor page and see if you can find the most common interview questions. Practice answering these questions with a friend. 3. Stay Relevant - answer using the STAR method but make sure the example you use is relevant to the role you are applying for.

I think once you have mastered the STAR model, it’s so important to prepare. What’s always worked for me is: practicing in front of a mirror to see my facial expressions, if I’m smiling etc., recording to see how I sound and where I can tweak tone/style, and practicing with a friend who will be candid with feedback but also ask me alot of probing questions :) Writing your responses down helps too and something you can bring with you to refer to in the interview!

"If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail". Simple but so important. Do your research, speak out loud your answers. Consistency and confidence brews. Be positive, smile and be appreciative of what interview and opportunity you have earned. The people you speak to will feel your vibe. You got this.

Kick-off with a list of what the job needs and align your skills closely. Recall specific instances where you demonstrated these abilities. Describe each event concisely through Situation, Task, Action, and Result. As much as possible, make sure that your stories resonate with the role you're looking for. Prepare brief but impactful STAR structured responses; rehearse them out loud to improve your speech (and quantify your contributions with data where possible!) Remember, your enthusiasm is your best ally. Go ace that interview!

When you interview, come prepared with specific examples related to success around the STAR method. You can brainstorm beforehand what types of questions will be asked and the examples that you create may be able to be applied to many different scenarios of questions. Role playing with a friend or colleague is also a great way to practice both asking and answering questions. If you come prepared with successful instances of executing the STAR method, you will be prepared no matter what questions are asked. You will also exude much more confidence which is also a key component to acing an interview.

Every interview has to be prepared like it's the first one. STAR is pretty very much trying recall and put together all the past experience.

When asking candidates for one specific example of their experience, I am always diving deep with follow-up questions. One of these is "If you would have to go through this problem-solving task again, would you do it the same way or differently?" When I spotted problems on the presented example, this questions helps to see, if the candidates has spotted them as well. Furthermore, it's showing, if a candidates can reflect on their impact and come up with new innovative ideas in the future. This is also a way to see if the candidate can communicate own mistakes clearly and learn from them.

Situational based interviews provide you with an opportunity to show your managerial / leadership skills. Even if you are only good and not great technically, but you can crack the interview if your are good at managerial skills and communication which you can showcase while answering the situation based questions.

You can always improve your interview performance but don't be too hard on yourself. The best company for you will have a feel to it and you will know when there is a mutual fit. If you take parts of the interviews that lead you to the right company you'll eventually find that right place. If you reflect on interviews you'll notice times when you knew things were not going well or when you got positive feedback in the interview. While situational interviews are common you also can combat one-sided interviews by asking your own situational questions so don't forget to prepare good questions to sprinkle throughout your discussions with any potential employer.

Practicing makes it better! I think like anything else in this world we can improve our performance in any type of interviews by practicing, whether with a friend or colleague or simply attending interviews as many as you can. Situational interview is a great interview technique where one can leverage on to showcase unique skills and personality traits that makes you suitable for the role. I've seen a lot of candidates struggle to perform as they often answer in high level POV and have hard time fetching specific relevant examples. If you can answer with clarity and confidence, you'll have an edge amongst other.

If you are being asked situational interview questions, you should be proud that you've made it that far in the interview process. You have already proved you have the general skills for the role. As much as you prepare, there may be questions that you did not practice. Pause and take a minute if needed to answer the question. Ask the interviewer follow-up questions if you need more detail on the situation related to the role. Interviews should be conversational and put you at ease to be authentic.

Honesty is the key to build a professional relationship built on trust. You don't need to prepare yourself that much, just be yourself, be honest and explain the closest action you would take on that very situation.

HONESTLY - you have to be kind to yourself, regardless of the outcome. After the interview, do something nice for yourself, putting yourself out there is hard! (No one, not even the interviewer likes to be subtly judged).

Prepare yourself by researching the company, their mission and goals, their market, and why you can be a good cultural match to these characteristics. Understand how you can contribute to these attributes of their business and not just what they can do special for you.
