You're creating content for a global audience. How can you ensure it resonates with everyone? This is a common challenge for content strategists who want to reach and engage diverse audiences across cultures, languages, and preferences. In this article, you'll learn some practical tips to make your content more inclusive, accessible, and relevant for your international readers.
The first step to create content that resonates with everyone is to know who you're writing for. You need to understand your target audience's needs, goals, pain points, and expectations. You can use tools like personas, surveys, analytics, and feedback to gather insights about your audience. You should also research their cultural, linguistic, and social norms, values, and preferences. This will help you avoid stereotypes, biases, and assumptions that might offend or alienate your readers.

To ensure that content resonates with a global audience, it's crucial to consider cultural diversity, using inclusive language and avoiding references that may not be universally understood. Content translation and localization, along with sensitivity to regional contexts, are most important. Additionally, conducting audience tests and collaborating with local teams to gain authentic and relevant perspectives will help ensure content effectiveness across different regions. Finally, market research allows understanding preferences and trends of each demographic, facilitating the creation of meaningful and relevant content globally.

The most effective content marketing campaigns are underpinned by target audience insight - i.e. demographics, pain points, key motivations & drivers and more. The second step to create content that resonates with everyone is to adapt your language to suit your audience. You need to consider the tone, style, vocabulary, and grammar of your content. You should use clear, simple, and concise language that is easy to understand and translate. You should avoid jargon, slang, idioms, metaphors, and humor that might not make sense or be appropriate for your readers. You should also use inclusive and respectful language that avoids gendered, racial, or discriminatory terms.

In the modern world of content creation, language isn't the major hurdle anymore thanks to dubbing and subtitles. What truly matters is being sensitive to your audience's beliefs and values. You want to avoid inadvertently offending anyone, especially those with conservative viewpoints. This means being mindful of what you show and say, ensuring it aligns with diverse cultural sensitivities. It's all about creating content that resonates positively across the globe!

Use simple, plain language in your content. There's a temptation among content marketers to use sensational / flashy language or capitalize on the latest trends (e.g., TikTok). That language likely isn't going to transcend a global audience. And that language is going to make your content look dated eventually. At the end of the day, clarity wins. Use simple, plain language in your content.
The third step to create content that resonates with everyone is to optimize your format to make your content more accessible and engaging. You need to consider the layout, design, and media of your content. You should use a responsive and consistent design that adapts to different devices, screen sizes, and orientations. You should use headings, subheadings, lists, and white space to break up your content and make it easier to scan and read. You should also use images, videos, audio, and interactive elements to enhance your content and appeal to different learning styles.

You should also adapt your content to suit the local regulations, standards, and conventions of your readers. For example, you might need to change the currency, units, date, time, or color of your content.

The sixth and final step to create content that resonates with everyone is to iterate your content to improve it based on the data and feedback you collected. You need to identify and prioritize the areas of improvement and implement the changes accordingly. You should also monitor and measure the impact of the changes and continue to test and iterate your content until you achieve your desired results. You should also document and share your learnings and best practices with your team and stakeholders.

"Your audience" doesn't mean "everyone". No need to try to please everyone. Focus on the thing you like the most. Make it easy and accessible to use by your "ideal" client. Be consistent over long period of time. At least 3 months. Analyze the result, reflect on what went wrong, things to improve. If you see something similar to "no results", change your approach. Depends on specific, sometimes it means "drastically".

In my experience all human experiences are universal. Write stories that resonate across geographical borders. Cultural differences aside people act and react in similar ways to events that are joyous and events that are calamitous in their lives. Tap into the relatability first then create the diversity.
