The key here is "Interactive" - whatever you do to create a dashboard, you have to focus on enabling your stakeholders to see the 'what', 'why' and 'how' behind the numbers that are popping up on their screens with as little explanation as possible. "Keep in mind that your data viz notebook or exploratory dashboards on Power BI or Tableau were GREAT, just AWESOME in leading you to the insights you need to present. But be mindful of who and how will consume your end work. If you need to present to a small committee, such as your C-Level executives, you'll likely find that less is more. Choosing just one visualization that fits on a single PowerPoint slide will go miles.

The beauty working with data is that all of your KPIs should be actively data driven AND measured. If you’ve improved pipeline efficiencies during your tenure, great news! You can measure it. If you’ve leveraged business intelligence platforms to improve another departments KPIs— great news!! You can measure that. When your supervisor comes to you with problems to fix, write down the data surrounding those problems. When you solve their problems, write down the new datapoints related to the issue. Before you know it, you’ve assembled a portfolio of measurable, valuable contributions to your company.

Solve the problem that needs to be solved, not the one they asked you to solve. The proof is in the pudding. However, you must communicate "What, What, So What, and Now What"?

During my time with the Central Data team at a leading automotive multinational, I learned the importance of quantifying our impact to gain leadership buy-in. When showcasing your analytics work, transform results into compelling metrics. Don't just say you "improved efficiency"; specify that you "reduced processing time by 30%, saving 200 work hours monthly." Quantify cost savings, revenue increases, or error reductions. Use before-and-after comparisons to highlight your contributions clearly. In the corporate world, numbers tell a powerful story—they're the language of business impact. By presenting your achievements in quantifiable terms, you significantly boost your chances of securing that promotion.

I strongly believe that my soft skills make me stand out in the crowd but there's nothing that speaks louder than your numbers. Building on that, the recipe starts with collecting ingredients, similarly, you need to develop a clear understanding of what the baseline or benchmark for a certain KPI is. It's a piece of cake from here on: Measure your performance based on this metrics, make the data speak in your favor and use visually compelling ways to communicate the impact of your achievements. I use the graphs in Canva but if you want to go the extra mile: use PowerBi or a similar data viz tool.

Quantifying your achievements can take many versions but is always important show how you make an impact by adding value. Identifying how you reduce non-productive time or increasing efficiency or process engagement can be an alternative when you are not in a position to increase revenue or save costs. For example, if you have a process that takes 16 hours to set up before you can analyze but reduced it to two then you can say 'I reduced non-productive time by 90%'. If you develop a tool which has been adopted by many then stating those statistics of adoption is another way to quantify your achievements. These alternatives show how you are solving problems, adding value, and will put you at the top of the candidates for promotions.

Innovation is all about bringing ideas to action and delivering results. Hey, this is really important, okay? It's not just about being creative, which, by the way, is already a challenge in itself (suggest reading 'The Creative Process' by Fayga Ostrover for a good reference on creative building). Innovation only happens when those neurons of yours actually put that quirky idea into work and output something tangible for others to interact with (and hopefully generate results such as new revenue, lower costs, better performance, etc). Sometimes your main villain here is priority setting. BAU (Business as Usual) may clog up all your free time, so my recommendation is to be mindful and reserve time for study and experimentation.

Communication is key! If you don't have one already in your organisation, you could create a Slack/Viva Engage (or whatever channels you use) to share some of the great data analytics work that you or your team are producing. This would increase your visibility internally and create excitement internally as well around data.
