Your boss is never around when you need them. What can you do to get their attention?

Early in my career working for the federal government, I found myself in a situation where I couldn't get my boss's attention. My advice is to keep quiet and always strive to do more than what is expected of you. Go the extra mile whenever you can, and volunteer to do jobs that no one else wants. By delivering quality work, you will surely get noticed by your boss and their superiors. However, if you need your boss's attention for guidance or assistance on a project, send them an email requesting a 20-minute one-on-one meeting every week until they respond. If the outcome of your project doesn't meet your expectations, you will have documentation showing that you attempted to connect with your boss.

I have realised that effective communication is a great skill and if utilized properly can enable you achieve lots of deliverables and it could be used in different forms. If your boss is not readily available when you need him/her, my suggestions will be to communicate with via email , phone calls and other approved communication channels by your organization. You could also request to schedule a meeting at a time convenient for him/her to discuss this as well as get the help you need and I’m sure your boss will be eager to fix a slot in the calendar. In the interim , reach out to other colleagues in the team, knowledgeable in that area to assist you.

It should be a regularly planned meeting. Since this isn't the case, you might want to check in and conduct some due diligence: Are they traveling or occupied with other projects, personal issues, etc.? Then, ask the team in a non-intrusive manner, and if it concerns you, try to collaborate with a buddy to make necessary changes. Obtain the full picture before jumping to assumptions. Be positive. They may be busy with something else. In a typical situation, we need our managers for two reasons. 1. Some approvals that you cannot bypass anyway. We can search for alternate approvers and explain to them that your boss is on something else and, seek help for that occassion. 2. You may need to showcase your work on priority. In these exceptional cases, I take liberty and continue with my work. In most of those cases, my bosses were happy that I did not wait for their approval and appreciated me, for completing the task (sometimes I was on the wrong track ... but they fixed it themselves later :) )

Once you get his attention be focused on relevant issues that are critical to progress of the company. Also, ask him what you should do in his absence to avoid mental stress of waiting for him to be back before things move.

If your boss is often unavailable, try scheduling regular check-in meetings to discuss important matters. Additionally, consider sending concise and informative emails summarizing your needs or concerns. If urgent, you may need to escalate the issue through appropriate channels within your organization.

You have to discuss and agree with your boss on his/ her preferred communication way. Accordingly you need to set up the status updates, follow up sessions. In case you need boss’s time on priority, you should clearly articulate the ask in his/her preferred communication way to get attention and time. You need to understand that the matter which is priority for you, may not be top priority for boss due to blockers/ issues in other strategic organisational transformation programs which needs more attention at that time. The other thing is you have to build trust relationship, boss should feel that if you are looking for him/her, it means surely something priority.

You should bring this concern to your boss's attention right away. Advise them that you are falling behind and would like to be able to continue to do your job in an orderly fashion but need their support to do so. Find a time on their schedule (15 min max) for you to connect in the Morning or Evening. Whichever choice is made, ensure that you come to the meetings with a clear meeting agenda in hand with all of the points of discussion to ensure all things are covered and nothing is left out, this way you can get all of the answers you need within that one meeting.
