Metrics like user satisfaction, engagement rates, and churn rates provide valuable insights into how users interact with your application. By incorporating UX metrics alongside technical performance indicators, you can gain a holistic view of your application's effectiveness. I have used monit to particularly measure process metrics and take necessary actions on failure or boundary conditions. One of the easy and flexible one.

App Dynamics is a tool for performance monitoring that seems good so far. There are also some tools available on AWS and Azure. I didn't use them much. But I completely agree that performance monitoring is must to optimize application performance.

This way, you can avoid human errors, communication gaps, and wasted time. You can also foster collaboration, transparency, and accountability.

It is a multilayer process. First having an application performance monitoring (APM) system is a great starting point. An APM will surface up metrics like response times and error rates. Another layer to work at is the resources being consumed. It would be great to know the CPU and memory of the underlying containers or VMs for the app and they are configured optimally. Next thing for optimization will be the right layer, what you can achieve with a database index can be different than adding a cache layer or doing code optimization. So choose your medicine depending on the symptoms.

Ultimately – the only thing that matters is usage and NPS scores. Everything else is just vanity. You can have a million one alerts, but if you're not paying attention to vital things, it's just noise.

I have been part of delivering complex software solutions to big enterprise customers that was a crucial part of their 24/7 operations. In the beginning we had no monitoring and essentially the customer would raise a support ticket when something didn’t work – often due to some service having a nervous breakdown. As time has progressed the system has been augmented with both in-app monitoring (for the end-user/developers) as well as automated tracking using standard 3rd party software – in our case Sentry. While our software has stabilized over time, and thus very few errors occur it gives the team great confidence that even if something happens then we will be notified immediately.

All the above sections already have good points about effective monitoring, but we shouldn't underestimate cost monitoring either. If we don't set proper monitoring metrics and limit the number of monitored services, the bill will be skyrocketing really fast that can burn all your budget. Before starting monitoring any system, we should have clear expectations and limit monitoring within necessary services. That can help us controlling the budget better. If you have limited budget, you can consider self-hosted solutions like Grafana and Prometheus for backend, and Sentry for frontend.

All of the above are great advice for an already launched application. But one thing you might want to consider is how you can optimize your app's performance and prevent bugs or any kind of problem before you even launch the app which will also reduce both time and money needed to apply compared to after launch. And obviously the best way to do that is through comprehensive testing and debugging. You may use simple tests during development or making a complex testing environment including agents and with simulated scenarios. Doing so will help you find and prevent any kind of problems after launch.
